Yesterday we took our 6mth old whippet there for emergency snake bite treatment. We took the snake with us so they could give the right anti-venom and they refused to look at it. They wasted precious time doing 2 lots of blood work that we already knew she had been bitten and advised us it would be between $6-12,000 for treatment. During this time she declined even further having severe breathing difficulty and we had to put her to sleep. I have top cover for all my dogs, money was not an issue. A simple do you have insurance ? Would have surficed and treatment could have been started, the right one had they bothered to look at the snake. I was charged $451 for no treatment and to put her down. They then went on to tell me that they could check the other 3 dogs with a simple test to see if their clot levels were normal. Having no faith in them at all, I rushed the other 3 to my normal vet whom inspected the dogs thoroughly, deciding to keep one for a few hrs under observation. She was fine and allowed to go home. I was charged $59 to check 3 dogs and observe one for 3 hrs. He asked to see the snake, noted it was a Dugite and was shocked that they did not view the snake. Adminstering generic anti-venom can actually make it worse, particularly in the case of Death Adders. I also asked about the test that was suggested. I was told it was unneccessary and often false negatives and positives can be given due to stress and individual breeds. My bitch had her eyes tested, heart checked, gums checked every 1/2 hr for any change. The conclusion is I may have been able to save her if they had not been concerned about their hip pocket first and wasted time. The actual cost is $400 a vial to vets (my friend a vet nurse told me what it costs) for anti venom Im sure anyone could pay for that first vial whilst deciding whether to continue treatment. I was quoted $1500-2000 for the first treatment- that is profiteering from a tragedy. I will NEVER EVER take my dogs there again.
Took my injured cat to their emergency clinic on a Sunday night - was seen to in 20mins, Dr Carolyn Jackson is an absolute delight - reassured our worries and explained costs upfront. Will book all returning appts with her now :)
I TOOK MY BELOVED RIDGEBACK PUPPY DASH TO BALCATTA VET HOSPITAL TODAY , SHE HAD BROKEN HER THEMA , I PAID THEM $650.00 DEPOSIT THAT HAD TO BE PAID UPFRONT FOR PAIN RELIEF AND X-RAYS. THEY PHONED ME 15MIN AGO AND SAID THE OPERATION WILL COST BETWEEN $5000.00 TO $7000.00 . AND IT HAS TO BE PAID IN ADVANCE. I TOLD THE VET I DIDNT HAVE THAT MONEY UPFRONT BUT I DO HAVE PET INSURANCE . THEY SAID IT NEEDS TO BE PAID UPFRONT. THESE PEOPLE ARE CRUEL AND WITHOUT HEART AND JUST INTERESTED IN $$$$$$ THEY TOLD ME I HAVE TO GO DOWN AND SIGN A CONSENT FORM TO PUT HER DOWN.. IM NOT GOING TO. I HATE THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our 9 month old Golden Retriever cross pinched a half empty pack of pain killers off the kitchen bench while we were out one night. After coming home close to midnight and finding the chewed up empty pack we immediately called Balcatta Emergency Vet and received over the phone advice. I had never been to this practice before and had only heard about it through a work colleague. Over the phone we were advised that the amount of pills was a low toxicity risk however they recommended we bring him in without putting any pressure on us. We took him in and he was seen within 5 minutes and they induced vomiting. The vet we dealt with was Richard, a young vet, and he was great. He provided us with about 6 different options of treatment according to budget and was not at all judgemental when we had to choose one of the lesser options due to financial difficulties. Very professional, the cost is up front the whole way through, and they are very sensitive to the patient and owners situation. It ended up being quite a reasonable price with all procedures, consultation and medication for $260. Would always trust and go back to Balcatta Vet Hospital.
My sister took her puppy who was vomiting blood to Balcatta Vet only to be told that they would not treat her dog unless she came up with a full payment of $2000 on the spot to run a whole bunch of tests, despite knowing exactly what was wrong with him and exactly what caused it. The staff were unsympathetic and unwilling to help. (Unless of course you're lucky enough to have that sort of disposable income lying around!) Will stick to our regular vet in the future.
