These people should go out of business. We lost our dog while visiting in Tucson. After posting her info everywhere and putting up signs we started contacting animal shelters. The Humane Society people never answered their phone and never called back. My daughter who lives in Tucson would also drive to shelters every three days. The Humane Society people wouldn't let her see the animals. She had to accompanied to do that, but to be accompanied she had to wait an hour or so every time.. (this on top of the 30 minute drive each way, and zero info because you can't call them!) Are they trying to help people and pets? If so they are terrible at it, and uncaring and obstructive in the process. Take found animals to Pima Animal Control instead. They have a much better chance there of being reunited with the people who love them.!
In January of this yr, we were advised by the store people at the Park Place Mall that the Humane Society had a special dog of Chow mix, which we were looking for. The next morning we went to the shelter and fell in love with who they called Parrot. We have had him ever since and wouldn't trade him for all the tea in china. He has come a long ways from when he got here. His sister and him r great friends and very playful. Joe which we named him, loves to b petted & loved on. He loves going for walks with us.
My dog Max (Irish Wolfhound, almost 4 years old) got loose Saturday morning. In my neighborhood he is brought back before I even realize that he is gone. The particular neighbor that picked him up this time decided to drive around with him looking for me even though I was home. She came to me after three hours of driving around (so she said), and informed me that she had turned him to the humane society. Also had the nerve to tell me it was a $35 fee to drop him off but I did not have to pay her back. When I went to the Humane Society on Kelvin I ID'd him and was told that it would cost over $300 to get him out if I did not fix him, over half of that was the fee for him just to be housed there. (He is almost four now and I have kept him unfixed because later I wanted to breed him and keep the puppies so after I lost him I would have something more then just a picture). But if I decided to fix him then it would only be $108, this was because I would not have to pay for his stay there. I left them letting them know I would call and they said if I decided to get him fixed I can pick him up on Tuesday and pay then. I was not able to get a hold of them on Saturday so I tried calling Sunday and Monday but they did not have an answering service or machine so I had to wait till Tuesday. I finally got a hold of someone and they informed me that my dog was being evaluated for adoption. Of course I was angry. So I had to be late to work and was forced to get him fixed because I did not have the money to get him out of there unfixed. I am infuriated that I was forced to get him fixed because of money after taking so much negativity from people because I did not have him fixed from the time I got him when he was 4 months old. I have a hatred to the humane society that I will never be able to explain. These people claim to want to help the animals but they are there for the money and to manipulate people into doing it the way they want to. I got my cat from them and previously thought they were awesome but after this experience I will never support them or go through them to get an animal. My dog was in that place for five days because of them and he has never even been to the pound before, I received him from a home that had 2 other big dogs. I love my dog with all my heart and am heartbroken that I had to fix him because of money and because that is what they thought was best for him. Owners now a days do not have any say whatsoever. I would not recommend anyone to go through them if you have a conflicting thought of what you want for your animal.
The staff seemed like they wanted to help at first but then would not let us take either dog that seemed sweet out to the yard. The first dog they did not know how he behaved with children so they told us no but I think we could have worked something out where we just brought 1 kid with us to see. The second dog was a girl pitbull and they said since we already have a girl dog we couldn't take her.(since when is there a policy that says girl pitbulls can't be around other girls every dog is different) I told them that we just wanted to take her out and see how she was but they said since we couldn't adopt her we couldn't. How can we even decide if a dog will be good for our family if we can't even take them out to pet? We were just looking and showing our kids how many dogs need homes and left feeling very unwelcome.
I went in today 3/23/13 to leave a stray for adoption. It was a very difficult decision because she is a very well behaved and sweet dog and I wanted reassurance that I would be contacted if she not adopted because I would come back for her as a last resort. It was a busy day there, they had a food truck rally and adoption discounts, so it was really hectic. The young woman who took the information was nice and professional and did say that they make every effort to place them in good homes and the only reason they would consider euthanasia is for behavioral or health problems. I know the white shepherd mix is neither, she's the sweetest dog I've ever met. I would've kept her but work, my little chug and five cats (all rescues) have me pretty busy. But I would rather keep her then have her put down, that would be a crying shame. I will write back with what happens as I will be calling in 72 hours to check if she's been moved to the adoption area. **Note- you do have to pay $35 to the shelter but it is worth it I believe. I want her to have the best chance at a great forever home, and nowadays, $35 barely buys a large bag of good dog food.
