I took my dog here back in August because of her limping. I had read great things about Abby Pet Hospital, so I wanted to give them a try. The staff is friendly but I was very disappointed with the services. The vet said that my dog's limping was probably due to her age (she is only 5 mind you) and to watch her and give her glucosamine tablets. I did this while limiting her activity, but she continued to limp until she would not put any pressure on the leg... I took her to a different facility at the end of October and have learned that my dog actually needs TPLO knee surgery!!! I am EXTREMEMLY disappointed with the fact that my pet was not examined thoroughly, and now she and I are paying a hefty price! This surgery could have been easily avoidable had Abby Pet Hospital actually looked her over more extensively in the first place. She didn't even get any anti-inflammatories to help with her pain and swelling, poor baby.

I called to make an appointment in the later afternoon. Our situation was a bit complex and I attempted to explain it to the receptionist to make sure all would go smoothly. I didn't take more than 45 seconds at an attempt to try and explain the situation. Well around that 45 second mark the receptionist got an attitude and then rushed me off the phone as if this was a fast food line. She speaks like she's reading off a script and that she isn't paid to answer questions or listen to the client's situation. It's like she's only being paid so much an hour and listening for more than 45 seconds is beyond her pay grade and she must draw the line there. They really shouldn't hire people who don't care about animals. Anyone can say they love a cute puppy, but if the receptionist doesn't care beyond that than she should find another job.

I apologize for the length of this, but for the price you will pay here, its good to be thorough. My chaweenie mix was ran over by a truck on a thursday at around 1 pm. He ran off and we searched for hours on our 40 acres but couldnt find him anywhere. Finally after sundown he came in through our doggy door with a piece of his femur (leg bone) sticking through the skin. Not a pretty site. By this time it was near 8pm, and all vets in Fresno are closed. Expecially considering it takes an hour to get to Fresno from our house. Because of the exposed bone we take him to the ER, they stabalize him overnight, keep the bone from drying out, and set up an appointment with an orthopeic surgeon. Supposedly of which are only 4 in the Fresno area. Remember this is on a thursday night. So Friday I get a call saying they have found a surgeon who will do it, Dr. Holmes at Abby Pet. Here is where it all gets way more frustrating than it ever should. We go to Abby pet, an hour drive from us. Thankful that someone would actually do the surgery on such short notice, but nervous about the cost. I was already sure I was going to pay through the nose. I talk to the technician, I talk to Dr. Holmes. I tell them I want any and all medications to be liquid, and that money is very tight so only the things that we REALLY NEED. I leave, he does the surgery, and I pick up smalls the next day with a bill of 3000$. Well, I am given 5 medications. 1 of those was a liquid and that was a stool softener. At first I was told anastesia causes constapation, but we stopped the laxitive after two days due to diharehhia (Abby later told me in in a phone call that anastesia actually causes diaharehha - so why the expensive stool softener then?). I was also told the other 4 medications in pill form there was no liquid available. And that normally the Tramadol could be liquified but not this particular Tramadol. So we go home and begin the pill regiment. Keep in mind my dog has a huge row of staples up his hip at this point. He was so hard to get pills down. He searched every single piece of food for any smell or taste of medicine. No pill pockets - not a chance. And if you tried to get them in the back of his throat he would thrash about threatning to pull expensive staples. Frustrated I call Abby back and tell them of my issues and is there anything they could do. Well I find out there is in fact something they can do. Of the 4 non liquid pills there are in fact liquid alternatives for all of them but one! In fact the Tramadol that they specifically said could not be turned to liquid in fact COULD be turned to liquid and they have no idea why I would have been told otherwise. So we pack up all the meds and drive 2 hours round trip to swap them out. I send all the pills with my girlfriend to go do the swap thinking that these professionals couldnt possibly screw this up. They do the swap for "free" but charge my girlfriend a waste disposal fee (for their mess up!). I get a call from Abby that made no sense about the medications and it wasnt until I walked them through my whole situation again that they finally knew what they were talking about. They were telling me to continue a whole bottle of medication they didnt even give to us. When my girlfriend finally got home, I saw that they not only didnt give me one of the medications back that they didnt swap, they discontined another medication altogether that cost 60$ with no refund. Which means they charged me for pills when I asked for liquid. Made me pay gas to swap drive to swap them out, then they took back the 60$ bottle of pills they mistakenly gave me, then charged me to throw them away. They even had to mail the medicine they forgot to give back to me. Which of course ment he missed doses. I paid these people 3000 dollars, and they are a bunch of idiots. Dr. Holmes is a great surgeon. But everyone else at that place sucks.Bottom line, dont go here if at all possible. They are overpriced and my experience was that of sever frustration. Go to Madera Vet Center, hands down. They will treat you right.

Dr. Holm and Staff are the best. I started going to him pets and years ago when He was on Abby. He couldn't have been kinder when He sent our Anita on... Thanks Doc...

First I would say that Dr Holm is a super compassion, knowledgeable, kind, patient and excellent Dr. But, the one person here who has actually touched my heart and helped me through some tough times is Lindsey. She is so compassionate and caring. She would often call me after my my Lilly's surgery just to see how we are both doing. Today April 15 , 2013 my 16 year old pug (Lilly) is being put down, due to a large tumor that finally made her just shut down. (I would give anything if Lindsey were there today) but I know she in excellent hands. They actually make a special appt for her ( We are not special...only been there for that one surgery) after I explained how very important it was that she be put down ASAP due to being in incredible pain that pain pills were not even helping. I would rate them all excellent and I would like to thank Lindsey for ALL of her priceless support and love in MY time of need!
