I've been taking my pets to Mission Pet hospital for more than 15 years and I have to say that they have always been very concerned about my pets whenever they were sick, they were quick to tell me when my pets didn't need medication or additional procedures done. Also, when my two pets died, within 4 months of each other (my 22 year old cat and my 13 1/2 year old dog) they were so kind, gentle and considerate of my cat my dog and of me. I even received sympathy cards after each had passed. The waiting room is small, the area has parking issues, but I have to say that the veterinary care my dear pets have received has been great. I always felt comfortable bringing my my babies there and when necessary leaving them there for care. I now have a new puppy and plan on taking him to Mission Pet as well (I highly recommend Dr. Gordon or Dr. Press-BTW "disillusioned" Dr. Scarlet left to head up SF SPCA about a year or two ago.
This place is horrifying. They have misdiagnosed illnesses in one of my dogs twice. The first time I figured, okay, doctors make mistakes. The second time, twice they misdiagnosed my dog's illness. When I brought my dog in because he had collapsed, they diagnosed him with a pulmonary thrombo embolism, which is a death sentence in humans and dogs, which I didn't know at the time. I asked what the prognosis was and was told my dog could be treated. After more than 36 hours at the hospital, the vet told me I could come see my dog. It was obvious to me the dog was not going to heal. I feel these vets are only interested in milking pet owners of their money and really feel no compassion for animals.
This is only going off of one experience, but when my dog had blood in her stool, I brought her here. I appreciated that they didn't pressure me into doing expensive tests and procedures without first trying the obvious. They prescribed a one week course of Flagyl (an antibiotic) to see if that cleared things up and if that didn't work they said I could come back in to drop off a stool sample (without having to pay for another doctor's appointment) and that they would go from there. Luckily the Flagyl was all she needed and I didn't end up doing other tests. But I appreciated the difference from other vets I've been to where they want to run every possible test and perform extra procedures just to charge you more money.
I have every confidence in Dr Gordon. I work with special needs dogs and have multiple visits each year for several years. Seen a few other Vets there and they have all been nice so far. Like everything these days, they are expensive, but Dr Gordon does not treat or dispense unnecessarily as far as my pets are concerned. Like any other professional, they only see a snapshot of your animal friend. So one must take responsibility for their own companions, observe carefully, give details and ask the hard questions. Google stuff you are not sure about and help them help your companion animal. The front desk staff are always nice in person, though busy. Negative points are the wait time (be aware: if emergencies come in, you wait). Also, the busy signals and long times on hold when calling in. Oh! they do not often call you with followup, so you must call and leave a message for the vet to call you with results of tests or to report your animal's status. Thus they are short one star.
