I love the staff at PAH. They take excellent care of my pug Butkus - they are very conservative and thorough. The office is sparkling clean and new also. If I have questions I can call over and get some advice which is very helpful. They send me updates and reminders when Butkus needs his next shots. Overall I'm very satisfied, love the docs and staff, and would absolutely recommend PAH to a friend.
We've been a loyal customer of Palomar Animal Hospital for many years at their old location as well as their new facility. This isn't an easy story for me to talk about. They cared for our lab, Max, who later became stricken with cancer. Dr. Mark Handel was Max's vet. Dr. Handel not only showed great empathy for the pain Max was in, but also the pain we, as his owners, were feeling. Eventually we made the decision to put Max to sleep and let him rest in peace so as not to prolong his pain. We had never gone through this process before and were filled with guilt and anxiety. Dr. Handel was incredibly supportive guiding us through the process. When the day came, Dr. Handel was there side by side with Max and our family. It was very somber and surreal. Dr. Handel had a calming effect on both Max and our family. When it was over, the family was crying and Dr.Handel was crying with us. The man has such great love and compassion for animals that he wasn't afraid to show his emotions. About a year later, we became proud owners of a little Jack Russell we named Missy. She is now 13 years old and has been under the care of the Palomar Animal Hospital and Dr. Handel her whole life!!! We would also like to point out that the staff at Palomar Animal Hospital are second to none. They are always professional and courteous when we drop Missy off for boarding or for any treatment. We always feel that Missy is safe and in good hands when we leave their office. Thanks, Palomar Animal Hospital, for all the love and care you provide for our Missy and us!!! Anna & Tim Deering
I have been bringing my yellow lab Toby to Palomar Animal Hospital for 10 years. Toby, like many other purebreds, has had his share of issues including diabetes, severe allergies, and elbow displasia. Dr. Handel has worked closely with me over the years to manage Toby's conditions. The staff is always pleasant and helpful. I am thankful for the teatment that Toby has received and am grateful that he is happy and comfortable despite his issues. I love the way Dr. Handel lights up when he is treating my dog. His genuine compassion for animals is obvious. I boarded Toby at Palomar Animal Hospital when we went away on vacation and he must have enjoyed his stay since he can't wait to get inside when we pull up for an appointment!
My animals have been patients of Dr. Knox and Palomar Animal Hospital for 6 years now. Unfortunately I have to agree with skatemongrol. Since Palomar Animal Hospital moved to their new location it's all about the money for them and their services have gone way down hill. They told me my cat needed a surgery for oxalate stones that turned out to be struvite stones and could have been resolved with diet and meds. He did not need the surgery and $2000 later not even an apology. This past April we took our new puppy there and they failed to diagnosis her distemper and it went to her brain. We had to euthanize a 9 week old puppy that could have been saved because they missed it. And I had her to them three times and saw all three doctors. Dr. Handel was the last to see her and by then it was too late. Sad thing is that the first visit I took her when she was sick I was scheduled to see Dr. Knox but there was some sort of tour she was giving and some sort of photo shoot for their new website happening at the same time so I was given to Dr. Nissen. She spent less than five mins with my puppy and sent a tech in to give me an estimate for $900 for all kinds of stuff they wanted to do. I asked what was wrong with my puppy and the tech said the she did not know. The treatment they wanted to do was the same as they way parvo was treated. Puppy tested negative for parvo 30 mins prior but since the doctor didn't have time to actually look at my puppy she went the throw it all at her and see what sticks remedy. I was not going to pay money for treatment when I did not know what it was for. Part of me thinks that just maybe if she would have read her chart and spent a little time with her she may have picked up on the classic symptoms of distemper that one would think all Vets would know. I would have paid every dime of treatment necessary to combat the distemper if they had told me that was what was wrong with her. I sure hope they are happy with their new website because it cost me dearly. We are no longer customers of Palomar and that saddens me. Dr. Knox and Dr. Handel are fantastic Vets. It's unfortunate that they are working for a business that values money more than the animals and their families any more.
Palomar Animal Hospital let us down when diagnosing my dog. Brought my female in to them to examine a hindering leg limp after several years of being a routine customer and they said there was nothing wrong with her. Well now she can barely walk and seems like she needs surgery but at this age I prob wont get it for her leaving her to live out her later years in agony because I didn't catch the problem in time to fix. I told them my issue and they didn't care, literally. They have poor customer service and rude representatives on the phone especially if your not paying them any money. I highly recommend another vet as their services declined greatly once they moved to their new location. As well, their prices seem excessive, they quoted me 1500 for a teeth cleaning, neuter & mole/growth removal? This seems excessive.
