When we relocated to Jacksonville, Florida finding a great vet was top on our list. My German Rotty, Coco is my heart and for her to have the best in health care & boarding is crucial to us. I came across Coastal Veterinary Hospital in a Google search. They had some great reviews so I decided to give them a try , I am so happy that I did. Dr. Bissell & Dr. Jacobs are phenomenal. From annual exams, never feeling rushed, all questions answered to OOPS my dog just swallowed a steak bone (lesson learned), they have gone above and beyond! It must be said that their Resort Staff & Receptionist (Christine, Catherine, Amber) are just as wonderful. Recently, a death in the family turned into many days out of town, and many last minute flights. Sure enough, Coastal always found room for Coco. They truly care. They care about your pet, they care about your happiness and continued business. I cannot say enough. Y'all are the best. We love you! -Danielle, Brock & Coco

I would have to say that I really love Dr. Avery. She is the best vet I have ever met. She is really compassionate and takes the time to comfort your dog and gain his trust the moment he walks in. Unfortunately, one of the women who works at the front desk was really rude and almost accusative when it came to my dog. Because my dog had been getting his medicine from another pharmacy it almost sounded like she accused me of not giving it to him! Im not going to ever be comfortable coming to Coastal again. I have 2 dogs and have spent thousands of dollars in the past few years on them there. Its hard for me to make this decision because of how grateful and impressed I am with Dr Avery's care and dedication.

In response to Laudalina Keenan- as the Practice Manager at Coastal Veterinary Hospital, I am sorry to hear that you had a poor experience with us back in 2006. Many changes have taken place in the past 7 years. Unfortunately, since so much time has passed, I am unable to address details regarding your pets. I can tell you that our doctors only recommend ear oblation surgery in the most extreme chronic cases of ear infection, where the ear canal has become completely closed down. It would never be a first line of treatment, nor is it a simple procedure by any means. Managing severe ear infections (bacterial and/or yeast) can be very difficult if the client is unable to apply medications properly due to pain and inflammation or an occluded ear canal. Regarding the diagnostics that were run for your poor dog- it certainly pointed to a severe renal problem which was why the doctor began supportive therapy. The ultrasound imaging was done by an outside source that we used years ago, and because it was so long ago, we no longer have the records for results.Had a tumor been diagnosed on the ultrasound that was performed in 2005, perhaps an alternative plan would have been recommended. One thought may be to include annual ultrasound scans for aging pets, although they may be cost-prohibitive for some. The doctors who worked with your pets are no longer at our facilities, and they haven't been for a long time. I am sorry that your experience with us was less than satisfactory 7 years ago. Today, we host a wonderful staff of caring, compassionate and detail-oriented doctors and technicians that are dedicated to providing excellent care for our clients and their pets. We certainly will strive to continuously offer the best service possible. The constructive information provided by our clients of past and present is always taken seriously, so that we may learn and improve.

I had a couple horrible experiences with this place. First incident was my dog had a chronic ear infection and they tried treating it with meds but it wasn't getting better. The vet tried talking us into removing his ear canal. the vet kept bringing it up after our third visit when he realized we were not going that route he said "well lets try this". he gave us some ear cortisone drops to reduce the swelling and once we put those in his ear canals were open and receptive to the meds. He should have done that first instead of trying to talk us into removing his inner ear. Then the same dog had kidney problems so they did the tests, did ultrasounds and concluded he was in the beginning stages of renal failure. So they treated him with meds, during the day they ran an IV on weekends they sent me up beach blvd to the ER there for continued IV infusion. That er doctor took the chart looked at him said "no turkey for you" (thanksgiving) glanced at the chart and put him on IVs. this went on for a couple weeks. On the third weekend I asked for the charts and told them I was taking him to southside emergency. The vet got huffy and said "there's no reason for that it's not any cheaper, you should take him to the ER up the street. It's a little further up on beach blvd (not sure if it's there anymore). anyway I told her I was going to take him to southside and she handed me the charts with a bit of attitude. I checked him into the southside emergency hospital and 2 hours later the vet on duty called me to ask if she could do an xray on him. She felt his kidney values should have come up by then, so of course I gave her permission and she found a mass growing on his kidney that had been there for some time. How those Idiots at coastal didn't find that on the ultra sound is beyond me. the fact that his kidney values not improving did not raise any flags with them just makes me wonder how much they really care for the animals as opposed to the $$$$. Needless to say we never went back to them and found a new vet, it's a small quaint practice that really cares for our animals well being. the doctor at the new practice took care of our dog the last 3 months he lived and even made a donation in his memory to the veterinary college and the entire staff cried and signed a card for him. they loved him the short time they had him.

I took my new, extremely nervous dog here. The staff was very helpful and took the time to make sure my dog was comfortable.
