Adopted a dog from here on 4/3/2012. They told me he was to be kept indoors for his life and if for any reason I didn't want him, to bring him back. All that is fine. He came home with Giardia and a cold. They paid to have him treated. Again, not a big deal. They neuter all the puppies before they adopt them out, bad thing is that these puppies can be as young as 2-3 months when they let them go. My dog was neutered long before I got him at 6 weeks. Way too early. This can cause skeletal problems for larger breed dogs, lack of muscle, and pre-disposes larger breeds to cancer. I understand why they do it, as people will promise to have it done and then not do it... but it really does not need to be done this early and causes nothing but problems with done this early. My puppy has mild HD in his left hip. It is also impossible to tell he is male, because of lack of his proper testosterone caused his genitals to be incredibly stunted/deficient I know that sounds gross, but I get tired of people calling him a "she". They do NOT let you see the puppies walk worth anything when they are super young, they only let you play with them while still in their small puppy cubicles and you must CARRY them out of the facility. But as soon as I brought him home, I knew he'd have bad hips. He a was already bunny hopping and running with his legs "stuck". Again, not a huge deal as he was likely born with this condition and I can handle it and he's perfectly mobile etc. I was able to purchase $75 worth of shelter equipment and not have to pay the $150 adoption fee. That was great. They were really knowledgeable about dog ownership and I had to take a long, long interview (with my mother present, as well) to ensure I'd be a good dog owner. After ages, I signed off the paperwork and took my puppy home. The dog has a perfect temperament and is just really an excellent dog. Aside from the mild HD, he's perfectly healthy. There is ONE aspect that I'm kinda upset about, although it's not really the shelter's fault, per se. When I adopted him and asked about his weight fully grown, the lady said he'd be 60 lbs fully grown and to be kept indoors. That is fine, my previous dog was about 60 lbs and an indoor dog. Well, this dog is nearly 90 lbs and not done growing yet. When I took him to his after adoption vet visit and told the vet they said 60 lbs would be the puppies final weight, she LAUGHED at me and said the dog would get WAY bigger than that. I was slightly worried as I really cannot AFFORD a nearly 90 lb dog, and have had to make cuts to purchase enough food, etc. but we get along just fine and I'd NOT trade this dog for all the money in the world. All in all, great place. Clean, friendly, well lit. They ensure the safety of the pets by trying hard to place them into proper homes. I felt comfortable, and though she kind of seemed to not completely trust me, I left with my dog and I'm super happy with him. PROS: #1 Friendly, clean, well lit #2 Lots of puppies to choose from usually #3 Good adoption fees and whatnot #4 Free vet visit #5 Will take the dog back at any time if you do not want him CONS: #1 BAD at estimating a puppy's adult weight #2 Practices pediatric neutering #3 Close quarters means your dog will likely come home with something #4 Unable to see young puppies walk or move about All in all, good place and I recommend. Take it easy on adopting large breed young puppies, as they neuter them way too early and it can cause a lot of problems later on in life. If you're willing to take the chance like I did, go ahead and for smaller breeds it's usually fine. Also, if size matters a ton for you... take a close look at the paws of puppies etc. instead of taking their estimates.
Adopted a dog from here. Workers were very nice and pleasant. When we were about to take our new dog home they gave her one last hug before we left.
Awesome Experience I had no other option to get my little girl fixed. They were polite and nice and really could not believe they existed. Please tell everyone about this place so that more people can get their pets fixed and there are not so many unwanted animals running around!
The veterinarian Gloria Dorcey in the clinic at the Atlanta Humane Society treats customers like price tags. She acts as if she is getting paid on commission. All she cares about is getting as much money from you as possible and then getting you out of her face. She was extremely RUDE to my cat and I during our visit. She answers questions with a simple single word and barely bothers to speak to you or your pet. It seems to me that she is unhappy with her profession but she should not take it out on clients.
This facility seemed very nice, clean and had volunteers that really cared for the animals there. It had a good feel to it. The big dog area did seem very cold though and a number of dogs were shaking. Could have been nerves I suppose, but the room was super cold. My biggest complaint.......I was extremely disappointed in the bidding process we experienced today. Everyone at the facility made it a point to inform those bidding that bidding closed promptly at 2pm. We were told this several times in the multiple visits we made to see the dog we were interested in that this was how it worked. Today when 2pm rolled around we were told "just 2-3 more mins" while a person made their bid. What?? It also states in the rules that the person must spend some time with the animal before adopting. This particular person who won the bid came in 5 mins prior to it starting and didn't spend any time that I saw with the dog. So they spent no time with the dog, and were given 2-3 mins after 2pm to make their bid. Yeah, I'm a sore loser, but only when the rules don't apply to everyone!
