I really liked Dr. Lester. He was great with my skittish cat. His assistant was also personable and professional. However, the front staff leave A LOT to be desired. They barely acknowledge your existence. The goal seems to be to make the customer feel like he or she is wasting their time. Thanks to the vets I would still recommend this place.
I just moved to Wilmington Island with my 15.5 year old chow in November. By Christmas, it was obvious that her time was at an end. I took her to Dr. Mahany the day after Christmas and he suggested that we try some pain meds before making the final, irrevocable decision to put her to sleep. I did and she didn't seem to be in any pain, but she stopped drinking as well as eating. I carried her back in the next day, and he discovered a mass in her stomach which he said was more than likely cancer. He was very gentle with her and put her to sleep with me standing there. She went very peacefully. He was very sympathetic and understanding. I went back in February with a new rescue chow, just so she could meet him without having to get shots or an invasive examination. He fed her some treats, touched her all over, looked in her ears and her mouth, and was very gentle with her. I understand that there are a lot of vets who don't like chows and won't work with them or insist that they be muzzled first. I was very, very pleased with Dr. Mahany. I'll be taking her back for her annual shots and check up as soon as I can get an appointment!
Took my Shi-tzu today to Island Vet. to get an allergy shot and have his ears checked. I asked how much it would be BEFORE I went in and they said "how much can you afford?" I said $70 max and when the Doctor came in he spent a total of 30 SECONDS w/my dog. He had needle in hand and meds; gave him the shot w/o even checking his skin or anything and he was out the door. I went to pay and noticed a huge sore on the side of my dogs face. I had not even been out of the examining room a split second and was told if I wanted them to look at the sore, then they would have to charge me another office visit! And they made sure to charge me $69.78 for a total of THIRTY SECONDS! VERY DISAPPOINTED.
