I would not recommend this facility or anyone in it ever . Our experience with them.We had at the time a very sick puppy. Took him there on recommendation . I felt uneasy on the way up there. Should have listened to my gut ,it's never wrong. All of the staff we encountered except one, were cold and uncaring during my pups week stay. They were stumped as to what was causing symptoms. Were not in the slightest open to any suggestion about treatment . Having owned dogs for years and therefore seeing lots of different things go wrong..you pick general experience. Some symptoms you treat with certain things when others fail. When I inquired about the alternatives since what they were doing wasn't working ..in fact he continued to lose weight ,have severe diarrhea, vomit and not eat.I was met with cold stares and a, no what we are doing is how to treat this. When we would visit my boy was depressed, lethargic, sad ,(yes some due to sickness)and looked like he was just left in a cage all day with no attention. After a week of being on I.V fluids losing another 7 pds while there .My pet insurance of 3,000 used up. They released him. He was no better ,they could not tell me what the problem was and refused as stated to try a particular medicine for treatment of diarrhea and try a alternative for loss of appetite and vomiting .They said unless I was able to provide another 2,000 up front they would not keep him. I took him out took him immediately to the Madison Wisconsin Teaching school where they were willing to take a partial payment .Admitted him, they where open ,warm ,caring and receptive to my questions as to whether or not the things would work I suggested to Eastern Iowa .Those suggestions in conjunction with their other treatments and foods they tried had my boy within the week on the road to recovery .The one thing I noticed after two days of him being there .The look of giving up was gone out of his eyes. They would let us go back to see where he was kenneled ,in fact took us back there.Something Eastern NEVER allowed . Another thing they did I never saw Eastern do..love on,play ,interact and pet my boy. They all truly cared about his welfare. Not once did I ever see ANYONE at Eastern pet ,talk or really even look at my pup other then to put a leash on him and lead him back to his cell. Today he is a beautiful loving 200 plus pd happy Mastiff. No thanks to a facility that cared only about money.

DON'T TAKE YOUR DOG HERE! The only reason I am giving this place 1 star is because I can't give it 0. My puppy was hit by a car so we rushed her to the Eastern Iowa "Specialty Center". They took X-Rays and told us the only thing wrong with her was a dislocated hip, which cost $700 just to tell us that. The procedure they were going to perform was going to cost 3X the amount that any other pet hospital would charge. The vet's main concern seemed to be that my 13 pound puppy scratched his hand when he tried to move her. They kept her overnight to keep her on pain medication and fluids. Not until the next morning did they decide tell us that she hadn't urinated in the past 12 hours, and not until then did they decide to do a test despite the fact that they had been pumping fluids into her the entire night. They found that she had a rip in her bladder, and at that point it was too late because she had been urinating inside herself the entire night. The "vets" did not seem to care for our puppy at all and were secretive about giving us all of the information we needed to make the right decision. Now we lost a major part of our life. I hope that no one has to experience this place.

Can't say enough good things. It's not cheap, but it's 24 hr specialty care, so it shouldn't be. Early Friday morning I found my 8 yr old Boston Terrier Daisy having a seizure. As this was new for her, I had no idea what to do. I called my vet, and their voicemail said to call EIVSC. When we walked in they were waiting for us, and whisked Daisy away to the back. They managed to stop the seizing, and to give her meds that reduced the swelling on her brain. She was blind and lame for the first 24 hrs, and we were seriously considering putting her down. Dr Roa must have talked to me every hour during the day Friday, and was never anything but patient and frank, even when I was a sobbing mess on the phone. He gave me lots of options, and I was never unaware of costs that we were incurring. Daisy stayed at EIVSC for about 36 hrs total, and throughout her whole stay, the staff and vets were in constant communication with us. The vets respected our need to keep cost low while giving Daisy the best chance for survival. When we picked Daisy up Saturday afternoon, the staff made sure we understood exactly how to care for her after we went home. She's not the same dog, but she's improving little by little each day, and we are so grateful for the staff and vets at EIVSC for giving us some more time with our little dog.

Hope you never have to take your animal here, emergency or not. They are literally 3x the price of most other vets for same services. We came in with an emergency, and were forced to put our puppy down because we couldn't come up with the $3000-4500 they wanted to do 2 simple procedures that a normal vet charges $1600-1800 for (they already charged close to $700 to "stabilize" and x-ray her). They seemed uncaring and unwilling to work within a budget as they advertise. They are vultures that prey on peoples emotions. If you do have to go there make sure it's your last option!

We had a very negative experience at the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center. We received poor care from one of the veterinarians who flat out gave us wrong information which led us to have an expensive surgery (we discovered the information was wrong after speaking to other vets/medical care professionals). After communicating our concerns to management via letter, email, and phone calls (it took me weeks of persistence to finally talk with the manager) he never apologized and didn't bother listening to me before concocting a legal defense strategy (I had no intention of taking legal action). He said it was our word against the vets and that is where we left it. I would suggest people go anywhere else. It was a disaster.
