I won't take my pets anywhere else. In almost 9 years, we have taken a rat, a guinea pig, and dogs in there, and have NEVER had a single negative experience. The compassion and respect this competent, warm, and dedicated veterinarian shows even to a rat (which frankly is not everyone's idea of a household companion) left a lasting impression on my first visit. His staff has always been accommodating, professional, and personable. On our recommendation, our parents and our friends have taken their guinea pigs or dogs in, and have become permanent clients of the clinic and will take their pets nowhere else as long as TVAH is available. This clinic is better in terms of price than most, which is important to many of us right now, and in terms of quality, exceeds any other I have been to, which is important to ALL of us who love our pets. Whatever the reason for your visit, everyone in this clinic will treat you and your pet(s) with dignity, respect, and gentleness, and a trustworthy competence on which you can depend--and on which we certainly will as long as we have pets in need of excellent and affordable care.
We have 3 dogs and one cat and have been going to see Dr. Shackelford and his staff for over 10 years. Their customer service is amazing. They always know us when we come in and remember whats going on with our pets. Dr. Shackelford is the so warm and caring with the animals . We refer them all to our friends and family and they to have always been happy with the care and service.
I've been very pleased with the care my dog and two cats receive from Dr. Shackleford and his staff. They have always been attentive and kind. One of my cats has a serious (and uncommon) health condition, and she has responded very, very well to the treatment Dr. Shackleford has prescribed. I stop in at least once a month for prescriptions or pet food, and everyone there is prompt and courteous. They have my confidence and highest recommendation.
ZERO STARS!!! Dr. Shackelford misrepresented the availability of himself and his staff and his reckless, negligent actions KILLED two puppies as they were being born. My female dog was in labor and was having contractions but not delivering a puppy. He gave her a shot to increase her contractions WITHOUT taking an x-ray first to insure that the puppies were lined up correctly and the appropriate size to pass through the birth canal. This is STANDARD PROTOCOL and he didn't even bother. Sometime after he gave her the shot he gave her an exam to check her status. While doing so he was too invasive and broke the water of one of the puppies. He then announced that puppy was breach and that my girl would need a C-section to deliver the puppies. After promising me he would be available to do a C-section 24/7 no matter what, he said he could not do one. He referred me to West Vet in Garden City, which was at least 20 minutes away, and during rush hour traffic no less which added another 20 minutes. Immediate death sentence for the puppy whose water he broke. I was beyond devastated and terrified. Not only was that puppy going to die, the whole litter and my girl were now in jeopardy. The puppy whose water he broke was also crushed by the pressure of the contractions and all of the other puppies in line to be born behind him, due to the shot to increase contractions when there was NO WHERE for the puppies to go. The next puppy in line to be born was born alive, but had been crushed so much by the pressure that he could not breathe on his own. After several hours of struggling, his suffering was humanely ended. Two puppies killed directly due to the negligent actions of Dr. Shackelford. He refused to reimburse me for the value of the puppies he killed. No apologies. No compassion. Nothing. This was not an accident. He did not try his best. This was NEGLIGENCE PURE AND SIMPLE. I will NEVER go to him again and plead with you, for the sake of your pets, not to go to him either.
They take good care of our 'kids' - four ferrets and a Blue Macaw. Dr. Shackleford is the best. I especially like that he is willing to tell you when an expensive surgery - for instance - may not improve your pet's well-being and comfort, even if it does prolong their life. His rate for a basic office visit is less than most vets in the Boise area. I recommend him highly.
