TL;DR - Don't ever go here, there are cheaper, more reliable, more intelligent, and less disgusting places you can take your pet. Go to one, never, give Banfield your business if you value your pets. I wanted to write the most scathing and opinionated review I possibly could; however, after further consideration I am just going to present the facts. They are over-priced. One shot, a paper test to see if something was in our kitten's eye, the "office" visit, and prescription for an eye infection was going to run close to $300. This in and of itself is ridiculous, but tack on their vapid attempts to cajole my wife into buying into their worthless "pet insurance" (which, by the way, you still have to pay after the death of your pet [probably at their incompetent hands]) and then them talking RIGHT OUTSIDE HER ROOM'S DOOR about how she didn't buy into the program strikes me as more of a retail move, not something a respected Vet's office would do. Then to top it off they were trying to get her to fill a prescription with them, when she asked for the prescription so that we could get it filled somewhere else, they made it the most difficult and time consuming process they could. As if that's not enough to enrage me, their treatment of the animals is heavy handed and lacks in any form of compassion. I am thoroughly upset by the asinine marketing methods they use as well as the under-handed tactics they try to use in order to convince someone to purchase useless add-ons. I, for one, will never visit this establishment again, and seek to warn all of my friends and loved ones to do the same. Everyone that reads this may believe that I'm the member of a vocal minority, I would challenge you to read their consumer reviews on other reputable sites. Then make your decision. Unless, of course, you hate your pets and want them treated more poorly than the staff treats the people actually paying them money for their systematic attempts to squeeze any extra cash they can out of you.
People bashed this place for free consultation and stuff. I adopted a puppy from LHS through petsmart and a free visit was apart of the coupon packet. Well our puppy got a little sick and we decided to cash in on the coupon. Let me say, the lady at the front desk was nice and friendly and once we met the actual vet she was very nice as well. Not once did they push us to buy pet insurance nor did they try to up charge us. they actually said we should wait to get the shots till she was all better. they gave us a prescription and we were off and paid absolutely nothing. 100% free.
I really wanted to like this vet. Everyone was friendly, and I've used Banfield in other cities and had good experiences. But my dog gets more and more anxious every time we go. His fear of the place, which he's never had of any other vet office, is bad enough. But the vet also seems to be afraid of my dog. He's a big guy, and a pitbull mix, so when he's shaking and crying and hiding behind me I can see how someone would read that as a dangerous situation. I was asked to muzzle him, and that's fine. I don't actually have a problem putting a muzzle on him, and I did do that. What I have a problem with is that even when he was muzzled, and even though he was clearly terrified and not being openly aggressive, the vet appeared visibly afraid of my dog. She jumped back away from him, and talked fast, and generally acted like a person who was freaked out. After we concluded our business and took his muzzle off, when he was lying behind my feet, panting and clearly freaked out, she started talking about how she'd have to sedate him if he acted scared like that again. All he'd done was hide behind me, shake, cry, and growl when he was backed into a corner -- after which I put a muzzle on him. And he's never been so scared of a vet before! Something about that place or those people freaks him out, and I believe that the fear the vet expresses is not helping. I can't believe that a professional who works with anxious, fearful animals who are by definition in a stressful situation would be so afraid of a scared animal. I would have thought that reacting calmly to stressed animals was part of a vet's job description, and I was very disappointed in the way they treated my dog.
I was lucky enough to receive the best possible gift for Christmas: a new puppy. One of the many tasks of being a new pet owner is finding the perfect veterinarian. Lucky for me, I chose to go with Banfield at Pet Smart in Lexington, KY. On my first visit the nurse told me I was in luck because my dog was going to be seeing one of the best veterinarian’s they had. I soon found out that she was not lying, we saw Dr. Sarah Hensley. Not only does Dr. Hensley have one of the best personalities, she is attentive to the pet’s needs, treats you as though you are her only patient, and most importantly no matter how busy her day is she doesn’t let it affect her time with you. Too often in today’s busy life the quality of customer service has been traded for the quantity of customers a company can get through the door. This trend often leads to poor service and needs going unrecognized. Last week my dog, Joey, started making an awful sound in the middle of the night. Being a new pet owner I thought he was choking on something, it continued into the next morning and I called Banfield to see if Dr. Hensley was working and luckily she was. Joey unfortunately got sick with Kennel Cough from being at doggy day care; Dr. Hensley did a great job educating me about the cough and what preventive measures I can do in the future. I highly recommend any new or existing pet owner in the Lexington area to strongly consider Banfield, if she had a human practice I would see her myself!
Thinking of switching to banfield to save $, even though a prior experience at another banfield was very poor and almost killed our dog due to carelessness. Experience at appointment yesterday with rude staff and misrepresentation of prices confirmed that this is not the place to go for Vet care for us.
