Mixed Review here regarding my experience of Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital... First, the good: They took very good care of my dog, Salmita, who was diagnosed with a torn ACL. The veterinarian took the time to explain the different procedures and the scheduling of the operation and the procedure itself were all seamless. The hospital is filled with dedicated veterinarians and technicians who will take care of your pet. Now the bad: The hospital will truly do everything in its power to separate you from your money. Many examples of this, but I will list the following as these stick out the most in my mind. 1) I chose to perform the lateral suture procedure (the less expensive of two options, quoted $2800). Everything in my paperwork stated the LS procedure, but when I come in to drop off my pet, they state that I will owe $4200 for the other operation. Had I not checked and corrected the front office I would have assuredly been grossly overcharged. 2) They stated that they needed blood work done on my dog before they could start the operation and would get it done for me for ~$150, I opted to get it done by my local vet and it was significantly cheaper. 3) I received a phone call on Monday morning at 9:07 AM stating that my dog was ready to be picked up (operation was on Sunday; I was obviously at work and could not pick up until after work - stated 6 PM). All was good until I went to pick up Salmita and they stated that I would be charge for additional hospitalization. What? "We charge you extra for checking on your dog - 12 hour blocks". This was not mentioned to me prior to the operation and it most assuredly was not stated during the phone conversation to inform me that I could go and pick up Salmita. 4) A consultation with their physical therapist will cost you ~$150 - even after spending 3K, they are going to charge us to even consult with their PT? C'mon...why is a consultation fee needed when you know that my dog just had an ACL surgery? 5) Removal of sutures - thank you very much, but I will have my local vet do that. So the short of it is that your pet will receive very good care, but be prepared to be surprised by 'ghost fees' and then ready yourself to pay through the nose. Had I had more time I would certainly have shopped around more for comparators, but that simply wasn't the case this go around. I will not be making the same mistake twice!

I have never had a bad experience here. My dog Timber sees Dr. Silver who is a wonderful neurologist and has taken amazing care of us. She's consistently gone above and beyond even giving me her personal cell phone number and email address when I had concerns. I've also had occasion to deal with this hospital through the rescue that I work with and have found them to be just as professional and compassionate as when I take my own dog there. Last fall we had a young pup with a heart defect who we'd raised money for corrective, life saving surgery. When the first surgery failed because the dog's heart was so tiny (a possibility we were prepared for in advance by the surgeon) they kept the dog overnight free of charge and performed a different surgery the following day without charging us extra. They far exceeded our expectations & saved her life and today the pup is alive and well and has been adopted! I've read a lot of the reviews here and while it's true that this hospital is equipped to provide the best possible care for your pet and they have the desire to do so (okay, do you really think there is a vet that wouldn't want to do everything in their power to save your pet??)...you have to make sure they understand your expectations! If money is an issue don't be afraid to say so. Don't just keep saying yes, yes, yes and then be surprised when you get the bill. Everything costs money. Veterinary care is no different and it costs money to provide the level of care available here. They do accept Care Credit so you can apply for that if you have financial concerns. But at the end of the day....remember, their focus is on doing everything they can to save your pet. Most vets don't think about the price tag when they recommend something they believe is likely to save your pet's life (I'm willing to bet it's the same at your own doctor's office)....so you just have to communicate with them so they understand the expectation and yes you always have the right to say no or choose humane euthanasia. At the end of the day if you want the best care for your pet you need look no further!

Went to the hospital with our 10 year old Vizsla Penny and was amazed at how professionally skilled the entire staff was from admittance to discharge. The diagnosis & treatment was spot on (no pun intended) and the result was a dog well on her way to recovery. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This is where you want to go for treatment for your pet.

I have been a client of MVRH since it opened and my dogs have received superb care. I recommend MVRH highly. Recently my dog was under the care of Dr.Dianne Phillips. She is a gifted, compassionate veterinarian and I recommend her highly. The emergency department at MVRH is outstanding. I would not take my dogs anywhere else.

Last month when I brought Rocky in for a visit with an opthamalogist it was a very positive experience and he was diagnosed with PRA. The staff was wonderful! However, recently I made two to three phone calls to obtain a referral for someone who works with blind dogs in or near my area. To date, none of the phone calls have been returned and I am very disappointed and frustrated. Each time I was informed the call would be returned. I am still hoping for a response.
