I have to say that I have had pretty good luck with this vet's office overall, until today. I am several months behind in providing both of my dogs with their heartworm pills because of financial issues. So, I ordered generic heartworm pills from an online retailer (2 dogs, 6 months of generic heartworm meds = $56), who sent me an email that Parkway was blocking my purchase. I called Parkway to ask for the prescription, so that the online retailer would process my order. I was informed that I would have to bring both of my dogs in for heartworm tests first, to the tune of $70, before they would provide me with a prescription. The dogs were just there over the summer. I find it ridiculous and unreasonable to disallow an innocent pet from getting the preventative medication they need, because the vet wants to collect their testing fee. I would have happily brought my dogs in for their tests and checkups after the holidays and when the bills were caught up, but now I am looking for another vet.
We found Parkway online and read positive things about people's experiences. Our pet hedgehog was ill and they were very caring and intutive as to his problems. They even made a call on his birthday to give well wishes! Unfortunately yesterday, we had to put our beloved pet down. We went in late at night and every member of the staff we dealt with were very sympatheic and nuturing. It was exactly what we needed during that time. We highly recommend them and will definitely be returning in the future.
My daughter and I have been clients of Parkway Small Animal & Exotic Hospital and Dr. Thomas Bankstahl since he practiced veterinary medicine on Harper in St. Clair Shores. His practice has since become very impersonal and profit driven. A kitten died that may have been saved if the reception staff and Dr. Katherine Engel had shown some consideration and been more responsive. We had a scheduled appointment for one cat and brought in two and half week old rescue kittens for examination as well. We explained that one of kittens was in distress and the other two appeared to be stable. The two reception staff members pointed out there was only one appointment available and they could only see one kitten. They both spoke to us in very derogatory manner because we had not called ahead time about the kittens we had just rescued the night before. The vet saw our cat who had the scheduled appointment. She then gave us a very long lecture on scheduling appointments prior to the days visit, was very condescending, curt and rude. She never even gave the kittens so much as a glance. She told us that there where 5 emergencies ahead us and that we would have to wait to have the kitten examined. The kitten died less than a hour later. She and the office staff had clearly determined that a two and half week old kittens were a very low priority and that we where not valued clients. I will take my business the The Kitty Clinic on Garfield two miles away. The staff there has always been excellent towards my daughter and her cats.
I have a 'rescue dog' Parkway has saved his life. When with a Vet each has been thorough in every way; focused upon my dog; and, problem solvers. For nearly 40 years I have used great veterinary services of others for show and field dogs. None have been better than Parkway. The staff as a whole are competent, caring, and reliable (Vets, Vet. Techs, & staff). Because my 'rescue dog' was so sick when I took him in I have made frequent visits. So, I have had time to observe their operation. Every animal & bird is given individual attention (they even remember names!). Given the needs of my dog and being cost sensitive, I have been very pleased with their charges relative to other Vets. One can never get around the manufacturers costs of necessary pharmaceuticals. But, here I am able to say Parkway neither over prescribes nor significantly marks up to the levels of others. As final thoughts .... as I have watched and chatted, I have been impressed with the number of non-profit organizations Parkway charitably serves.... and, the primary Vet for my dog has always been available in times of an emergency.
I loved the hours and the cleanliness but I would not return, Some of the staff was rude during my 2 visits and after a $165.00 office visit for my sick rabbit the vet would not even talk to me for a minute or come into the room when I returned for the next visit to put my sick rabbit to sleep to assure I was making the right choice (my husband was sure, but we had the rabbit for 7 - 8 years and it was difficult for me and my daughter). I only talked to the young girls in the office and the tech. I found this vet on the MI rabbit rescue site and thought I would get better care from a specialty vet...but I was wrong.
