Willow is my first dog. She is a Kairn/Westie mix (At least that is what the shelters' best guess was) and I never thought I could love something so much! I want to give her everything she needs and wants so that her life is nothing but enjoyable and lengthy. Luckily, my wife (Who I love almost as much) has lived with dogs in the past, but really only took them to the vets as needed. My Willow is going to have it better. A animal loving co-worker told me that the place by my House - Sharp Animal Hospital - has a great reputation, so we took her advice and made Willow an appointment. The people I have talked to on the phone or in person have always been friendly, if sometimes short with their answers and statement. I can understand since they always seem pretty busy. No one has been even close to rude or pushy and they all treat Me, my wife and my sweetheart Willow gently and with kindness. I will admit that my wife has been tasked with taking the love-of-my-life Willow to Sharp's the last few trips. My last time going there was for an anti-vomiting shot since innocent and precious Willow must have ate something in the yard for the 4.2 seconds I stopped looking at her. The pained look in Willows trusting eyes and the piercing yelp! during the shot quickly made me light headed with an uncontrollable anger and I almost tackled the Vet Tech on instinct! Luckily, I was able to control myself with deep breaths and the knowledge that my Moon and Sunshine Willow would be cured of what was bothering her. Yes I am an over-protective wuss when it comes to my dog... No I do not have kids. When the Doctor does come in to look at my precious, unique golden flower of a forever puppy, he doesn't seem as in awe of her beauty and charm as I do. I wouldn't say dis-interested, maybe tired - which again, I can understand. The last appointment I went to was on one of their convenient days with extended hours. I am sure he has been visited by numerous "cute" animals over his career, but it was still strange to see anyone whose heart didn't immediately melt in the presence of my sweet and beautiful Willomeena. The doctor quickly pulled his hand back from Willow when she showed interest in his hand as he went to check her ears... Silly doctor! All she wanted to do was give you kisses for helping to make her feel better! He asked if she snapped at people like that often... What the H-E double hockey sticks are you talking about "snapped"? I mumbled something about him being the first and he continued his checkup of my 18 pound fluffy ball of sweetness as if he were examining a blood covered 100 pound war-hound with teeth sharpened to razors. The exam seemed rushed to me after that, but I was new to this. I know I have waited for a doctor in a tiny room for an hour or so, only to have the doctor come in and spend 42 seconds with me before sending me off with a piece of paper and advice to lose weight. Yeah, I'm a little chubby - who are you to judge me? Anyway, I am also not sure on the pricing. Is it high or low? I am not sure since this is the only place I have eve taken my perfect, angelic baby girl Willow and she is worth every penny. We have never been pressured or guilt-ed into buying anything extra or non-essential. They seem to give us a discount on her flea and tick meds if we buy a 6 month supply and they give Willow a little treat when we are done. I'm not sure I'd want to take my glowing princess Willow to a discount Vet anyway. Shape's is both convenient for us and from what I can tell, very competent. If I can trust them with the sweetest, prettiest, awesome, inspiring, loving, innocent, prefect doggie in Macomb county, you can too.
I brought my dog in for a check up, I was a bit confused on pricing for her tests and vaccinations so I asked the staff if I really needed a stool sample since I thought that was something I could save money on, considering I was easily was spending over $200. Dr. Malarney became aggressive telling me it's his "pet peeve" that people don't think dogs needs stool samples, asking me "DOES YOUR DOG GO OUTSIDE, DOES YOUR DOG GO OUTSIDE, DOES YOUR DOG GO OUTSIDE?!" blah blah blah, I sat there and bit my lip as he was raising his voice and acting like a foolish 5 year old with a tantrum. I was/am literally shocked at how unprofessional that whole situation was, he easily could have told me in a calm, normal tone, and I would have understood. I understand an importance of a stool sample, I love my dog I want her healthy, I was inquiring about the pricing if I really do not need the sample and I didn't need his aggressive behavior as a result. SO, in conclusion I would not recommend Veterinarian Dr Malarney AT ALL, he is a unprofessional disgusting human being who needs a lesson on how to talk to paying customers. (after all that's how your in business buddy)
Our experience with Sharp Animal Hospital was unnecessarily heartbreaking. We took our elderly cat to get nutrition and arthritis information, and to introduce ourselves and him to a new vet, as we'd just moved to the area. The vet techs and office staff were, in general, friendly and efficient, although the cats owned by the clinic are allowed to roam the lobby, antagonizing the visiting cats and spraying the furniture. Dr. Malarney saw our old guy. The first thing I noticed was that he was a bit rough with him. Our cat is 18 years old and clearly unhappy to be there, but the vet made no effort to be placating or gentle. Dr. Malarney noticed a large mass and immediately started using words like "grave" and "fatal." Shocked and now close to tears - especially given that we had come in for a routine check-up and nutrition advice - we agreed to x-rays, which confirmed that our poor kitty had a large tumor in his stomach/spleen area. The recommendation: IMMEDIATE EUTHANIZING. So we had come in for a routine appointment and had just been told that we had to kill our cat. Immediately. Or within two days, maximum. We were devastated. We took the cat home with us to think about it and review our options. We decided to wait, given that the cat is still eating, pooing, peeing, and purring. Why make such a hasty, permanent decision if he still has some quality of life? That was two months ago. The cat is still here, and still eating (like a hoss, now that we've switched his intake to four times a day, with nutritional supplements); giving him a little kitty laxative (the anti-hairball sort) helped with the constipation the vet blamed on the tumor; and he still snuggles, purrs, shows interest in things, and travels well (he just returned from a 500-mile road trip to the grandparents). He doesn't move a lot from the couch, but then, if I were as old as he is, I wouldn't move a lot, either. As long as he can still get up and down easily to make it to the litter box (which he seems to do just fine), I'm not too worried about his mobility or lack thereof. Dr. Malarney didn't listen when we said that our cat has always been on the thin side; he has never kept on weight well or been particularly active. He has three teeth left, and hasn't eaten dry food since he had dental surgery a year and a half ago. The symptoms that the doctor blamed on a fast-growing and immediately fatal tumor have been around for much longer than he suggested the tumor has been. Our cat could die tomorrow, just as Dr. Malarney predicted, or he could last another year or more. But we have had two more good months with him, and I will never regret walking out of that vet clinic with him instead of leaving him dead behind. Whether he goes tomorrow or in another two years, it was far too hasty and ill-considered to recommend immediate euthanization without reviewing pain mitigation and nutrition options. Why was he so eager to kill this cat? We will never know, because I'll never go back there. If you decide to take your animal to Sharp Animal Hospital, please be aware that, while I am not questioning his competence or training, Dr. Malarney's bedside manner leaves a lot to be desired, and he recommends death far too quickly over suitable alternatives. Get a second opinion if you're unhappy.
