Have been here on two separate occasions, each time for a different one of our bunnies. The staff is incredible here, both of my situations were late night emergencies and before I even arrived the receptionist did a wonderful job putting a very worried, near hysterical me at ease and giving me instructions for a safe and timely arrival. On both occasions...the up front staff, our techs, and our doctors, have been reassuring, informative, and speedy in getting our pets back for treatment. I should also mention that both the techs and the doctors clearly knew how to properly treat buns; they were so gentle and calming to our rabbits, talking to them the whole time, and doing their best to keep the stress level low...this was much appreciated as rabbits stress really easily. On the first visit our rabbit had an overnight stay and we were given multiple updates by phone which we really appreciated. I will never hesitate to come here; I live in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area and there isn't a 24 hour clinic that treats exotics like rabbits, so the drive to Novi is totally worth it. Our buns made it through their ailments strongly thanks to the caring, speedy, and thorough staff at the AEC! highly recommended.
We took our sick pug, Ginger, to AEC. She had pneumonia and pancreatitis. They admitted her immediately and assessed her condition and needs. She was placed in an oxygen area and given IV fluids and antibiotics. The vet, Dr. LaFramboise was friendly and very organized. She explained Ginger's condition and what would be needed. Ginger was in the hospital for two days. Whenever we called to check on the techs were well versed in her status and very knowledgeable. They have vets in the clinic 24 hours a day. The overnight vet, Dr. Corbett, called us as to update us and was wonderful. They are very competent and very caring. I would trust them with any situation that might arise. Ginger is now on her road to a full recovery.
If I could give this place zero stars I would. On September 28th 2014 I suspected my parakeet may have been getting sick. Since this was a Sunday all of the vets in my area were closed. I thought about waiting until Monday to take her to see an avian specialist in Saline but this was the second day of her symptoms and I did not want to let her get worse without doing anything. From the first interactions the AEC staff had with my parakeet, things did not seem right. They were not gentle or considerate. They waved papers, clipboards, and pens next to the cage, scaring both birds inside. When it came time for the examination, the doctor did not turn the lights out in order to calm the birds, like every other vet I have taken them to. Instead she chased my bird around the cage with her hand and a small towel, gripping onto whatever part of my bird she could get a hold of. At one point she got hold of my bird's toe and held on, cruelly, while my bird flapped her wings in fright. When she finally got a hold of my bird, she held her in such a way that her beak was open, as if in pain. Although she has never liked being held, she has had to endure it many times. Never has she responded this way. I do not know if she was being held too tight or what, but it was not right. Still, I did not say anything because I thought the vet knew more than me. After the examination, the vet put my bird in a smaller container in case she needed to be handled again. During this time, the vet left the room and I tried calming my bird by sitting next to her and talking to her, telling her everything was going to be okay. I was wrong. The vet came back to get my bird in order to give her a blood test. A short time later she returned, telling me that during the procedure my bird grew weak. They placed her in an oxygen enriched enclosure where she died. When I next saw my bird, the feathers all down the side of her neck were caked with blood. She was an active, energetic bird right up to her death. There was no reason for her to just die. After this had already happened the vet told me it wasn't uncommon for small birds to get so stressed out during these procedures that they end up dying. If she had told me this before hand I never would have consented to the blood test until the other options we discussed were exhausted. My poor bird died either from losing too much blood, becoming too stressed, or a combination of the two. I never expected this would happen. It never crossed my mind that bringing her to the vet would be what killed her. I fault the staff of the Animal Emergency Center for being cruel to my bird and not informing me of the risks. I fault myself for not speaking up, for consenting to the blood test, and for bringing her there in the first place when, despite the symptoms, she was acting like an otherwise healthy bird. Shortly after giving my dead bird back to me in a box, a staff member approached me about payment options. I refused to pay them for killing my bird. The doctor who did the examination then came in and threatened to take me to court. This part I would like to address directly to the Animal Emergency Center: I understand you were attempting to provide a service but you failed miserably. You are not entitled to compensation just for your efforts, especially when those efforts result in such a catastrophic outcome. You can take me to court but you will never get a dime from me. You have already taken more than you will ever know.
I brought in my cat on the 4th of July holiday weekend as he threw up a couple times and his regular Vet was closed for the holidays. as I was looking for options around my area, I have to admit I was a little worried after reading the reviews posted by others . Finally I just decided to take him in and decide for myself hoping we would end up with an antibiotic course. I was greeted immediately, and yes I had to wait a little to be seen but that was expected with the holiday. I was informed of the costs of all tests beforehand. Diagnosis was intestinal obstruction requiring surgery. I was not prepared for this. I decided to keep him overnight with hydration and anti-nausea med hoping it would pass on its own. In the morning when unfortunately I had to make the choice to go for the surgery, I asked them if I could get his Vet's opinion. Not only did they agree but they also took the initiative to forward him all the tests results and brief him regarding the case. The surgery was a success, I was always promptly acknowledged when I visited him and updated thoroughly on his status. The staff and doctor manners were all exceptional, very understanding and treating him exactly as I perceive him , an important member of my family.
Took my puppy in late one night due to some very odd behavior. After promises that they would call me and keep me updated, I had to call them every few hours to get updates. The cardiology side of this place is FANTASTIC, the Dr's and staff on that side are very caring and knowledgeable. However, after getting NO answers to why my dog was having this behavior, they sent me back home with her, with a $1000+ bill. Two nights later she was having the same problem, when i walked in, my dog was having what seemed to be seizures in my arms. The lady at the front was just nasty as soon as I walked in the door. She put me into a room so I could see a Dr. Now, mind you, I have my dog in my arms who is pretty much out of it, and is still shaking due to this "unknown" illness. This lady comes back in and asks me "why haven't you filled out your paperwork yet?" . Obviously I have my dog in my arms, so I told her, you should have everything on file, I was just here two nights ago. So again, being very rude, she told me that if I didn't fill out paperwork, the Dr would not see me. I told her that as soon as we got my dog under control and the Dr came in I would fill out everything. But no, that apparently was not good enough, she told me that I either had to fill it out or the Dr would not see us. She was rude to me the entire time I was there. Needless to say, I left and went to the animal ER at Maple and M5, were the staff was much more friendly and understanding of my situation. Would not recomend this vet to ANYONE, nor will I EVER be going back!!!!! Stay away!
