I have been taking my dogs to GTVH and seeing Dr. Burke and his associates for 20 years. The care my dogs receive from Dr. Burke and Dr. Jossens is excellent. I have had a couple after hours emergencies for my dogs and Dr. Burke met me at the office without hesitation. I like the way the Vets listen to me and work with me for the best care of my dogs. They are good people.
After using Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital for many years with good results, I had an issue with their service and will never use them again, and I will be sure that no pet owner I know will see them either. The main problem I have with GTVH is that they have no interest in the health and well being of your pet or your satisfaction as a client. Around 5:30 PM on a Friday night in June several years ago, my dog started to vomit blood. Like any sensible pet owner, I called the vet, which was GTVH. Being after hours on a , their voicemail directed me to the on-call emergency vet (who was not a GTVH vet). This is pretty standard, so I called the number they gave; no one picked up. I tried the number for another 20 minutes, but still nobody answered. In the mean time, my dog had collapsed and was still vomiting blood. Not knowing what else to do in the situation, I tried Dr. Burke's home number. His wife answered and I told her what was happening and that I needed Dr. Burke's help. She screamed at me that she wasn't her husband's receptionist and that I had no business calling the doctor at home. I pleaded for help, but she hung up on me. I tried to reach the on-call doc but there was still no answer. I started to call every veterinary office in the area; nobody answered at any of them, although this was unsurprising. I called my neighbors to see if they knew anyone that could help and I was finally given the phone number of a farm vet in Suttons Bay (I lived on Old Mission). She agreed to meet me at her office, and said it was no trouble to help an animal in need. I finally managed to find a vet who would see me, but it was 8:30 before I managed to get any medical help for my poor dog while he was bleeding out. When I finally arrived at the vet's office in Suttons, there was nothing the vet could do; we had to put the dog to sleep to end his suffering. She told me that if I had seen a vet sooner he might have been saved and make a full recovery, but that didn't matter one iota to Dr. Burke and his staff, despite their pledge to provide the best personal care to all their patients. Never go there, you will just be ignored when you need help.
I have been taking my dogs to the Grand Traverse Veterinary Hospital for years. Why? I have 100% confidence in the skills and care given by Dr. Jossens. I always recommend this practice to all of my friends that have pets.
