We take our shih tzu and frenchie to Strothertowne, and couldn't be happier. The staff is great and friendly, and actually care for your pet as member of the family instead of just another patient. We began going to Strothertowne because of its close location to our home, but even if we moved all the way across the city, we will continue to use Strothertowne as our preferred vet!
I trust these people implicitly. For everything from routine checkups to sudden serious (and chronic) illness, I am so glad I found this place and the staff for my pets and my peace of mind. Dr. Jones talks to me like we are the only patients in the office and I have never felt that his fees were anything but fair. Furthermore, he makes his recommendations clear and leaves the decisions to me, which is very helpful when dealing with a chronic illness. I'm always impressed by how genuinely sweet and gentle his staff members are, too. My previous vet wanted me to get a soft-sided crate for my very ornery cat so she could give him shots through the side- Dr. Jones can give him a full exam and shots (including checking his teeth!) without so much as a growl- that's how calm and reassuring the environment is at Strothertowne. These are good people AND they are good pet care providers.
I read the reviews thinking this would be a great place to get my cat declawed. I was 100% wrong. I NEVER saw the vet; didn't even know his name until I later called his emergency number later after closing. The reason why we had to call was because she had taken off her gauze and was bleeding profusely. This was the second time it happened after we had to turn around the first time to get it fixed by them. Instead of keeping her, they insisted she would be alright and that we could take her home with no problems. By the second time it happened, they had closed, so we called the emergency line and left a message. We got no reply, so ended up taking her to an emergency pet hospital. They told us there that she should have always had a cone on and that her paw was extremely swollen and looked possibly infected (because of the swelling). The other hospital luckily fixed her and gave us even more medication that apparently she needed and was not provided by Strothertowne. The worst part is that we picked her up Friday, they are open on Saturday and didn't get a call back form them until today (Monday) because the emergency line had been "out of service" the entire time. Why a vet would have an emergency line that doesn't work, I will never know. They didn't even apologize when they finally called me back Monday (the first and only time I had any contact with the vet).
We've had absolutely great experiences with Dr. Jones. He and his entire staff are so compassionate and helpful. We have taken our cat there for a couple of years and just recently got a puppy in January. We were new to the whole puppy experience and he was incredibly helpful and educated us on how to handle him and what to do/what not to do. Our girls also went to the vet with my husband when he took the puppy for the first time. He got down on their level and talked to them about what to do when he starts biting at them. He spent time with the girls and told them how to help us take care of him and how to get the dog to respect him. I would highly recommend this place to anyone searching for a new vet for their animals.
I changed to Strothertowne Pet Hospital a few years ago because, although I really liked the vet I was using, I did not like his staff - at all. I can't remember who recommended Dr. Jones, but I know it was someone in the animal rescue world, which is always a good sign to me. He and his staff have been wonderful, through good times and bad. At the time I think I had five cats and three dogs....all seniors. He has seen them all, and he has been wonderful, gentle, and compassionate with them. Sadly, he's had to help four of my cats cross, but I could not have asked for a better group of people to help me through it. His prices are reasonable, he takes time with his patients, and he's honest with me when I have to ask him the hard questions. I ask what he would do if this was his dog or cat, and I get the impression he cares about my dogs and cats as much as his own. When my Fagan recently took a turn for the worse on a weekend, he met me at his clinic on a Sunday morning so that we could help her cross to the Rainbow Bridge. I can't imagine having to take my beloved pet to an emergency clinic where I don't know the people when it comes time to say goodbye. He's great with the medical care, but I'd have to say it's the extra and sincere caring I feel from the entire staff that makes the biggest difference to me.
