I have had nothing but positive experiences with HSR and all of its staff. I started looking for a dog almost a year ago. I visited HSR regularly, as well as watched their website daily. Several times I went there just to bring one of the dogs into the play area and spend time with them. Each time I was greeted by extremely friendly and helpful staff members. When I found the dog that I felt would be the best fit for our family, I made arrangements to 'foster-to-adopt'. This arrangement is perfect to allow your family, other pets, etc., as well as the new dog, to acclimate themselves to each other. After 3-4 weeks, I went back in to finalize the adoption. I would strongly recommend the foster-to-adopt, as the sweet, affectionate, loving dog that is now part of our family, was nothing like this at the shelter. She was frightened of all the highway noises, other dogs barking, etc. If you are thinking of adding a pet to your family, I highly recommend HSC!
The process must be very different than it was 2-3 years ago. We had a wonderful experience. The staff were responsive and helpful (though very busy on a Sunday afternoon). We got to spend quality time with our dog in a special "meeting area" which has treats and toys. Once we decided we wanted to take her home, the intake process took about 30 minutes because 3 other people had chosen a dog at the same time as us. We were happy for the other owners/dogs, so we were patient. The staff had to stay past their closing time to complete our paperwork (again a Sunday afternoon - I really appreciate that). They gave us plenty of information, answered our questions, gave us a starter bag of dog food and great coupons, including a first vet visit. If you have a problem with an animal, they will always take it back, in fact they make you promise you will give it back to them rather than a shelter. My experience was great and I think they are a wonderful organization with great staff and volunteers.
I rescued two dogs from this shelter about 1 year apart. Our newest adoption last week came home with kennel cough which is typical but turned into pneumonia. The Vet that the shelter works with told us to contact the shelter because they would help us with medical bills. I call the manager Greg and he pretty much told me it wasn't their problem because THEY had no record of her being sick when she was there. Not quite sure how the puppy can get pneumonia from a dry, clean, comfy home but obviously she did. He was rude and very unhelpful. I feel bad for the poor animals that have to be in his shelter. Go there and rescue every animal just so they aren't given up on.
My experience with the Human Society was of excellence. Everyone welcome me and were very helpful and the process went exceptionally well. My dog Mustafa (name has changed) is the sweetest dog I've ever had. The team at the Humane Society allowed me to meet my dog to see whether our personalities clicked and they did. I was then introduced to the intake specialist who assisted in completing all necessary paperwork; followed by complimentary gift certificates in assuring Mustafa was well taken care of. I have nothing but positive things to say and I thank them for for doing such a fabulous job in caring for these pets in making sure they are adopted out to good families.
I am not a dog expert. But I am very glad I adopted a 3 year-old German Shepherd dog at the Humane Society of Charlotte. They addressed all my concerns and questions about the dog. The process was quick and the staff were helpful and supportive. They gave us a free dog training session, which helped us a lot to adjust and connect with our GSD. He is our very first dog in the house. We are blessed the dog chose us to be a part of our family. The dog literally changed my lifestyle. I started hiking again (visited Crowders Mountain with my GSD). :D I would like to express my deep thanks to all those who work at the Humane Society of Charlotte and to all volunteers who advocate for the dogs. Well done! Keep up the good work! Blessings!
