My 1 year old dog was acting strange during the morning and having trouble with BM's (rock hard) & comprised entirely of bone fragments (from the knucklebone she got for Christmas). We figured she maybe had a blockage. She was wobbly, stumbling, incoherent and not all there. Our local vet was closed and through google Banfield was the only vet that was still open at the time. So we were on our way. The receptionist with glasses was very nice and we even got in at a reasonable time. The doctor was nice and did a few neurological test to make sure she didn't have any damage. Passed! We explained about the bone and the BM's and she explained their might be another blockage (higher up where she can't feel) or dehydration. So after all the chit-chat she comes up with a series of test that cost a total of almost $900! She had passed a normal BM after the problem ones so I was more than likely sure that the blockage had passed and it was the only one, and dehydration was the real issue. - Office Visit - IV fluids - Blood Panel - XRAY (plus a ridiculous charge to send it out on a saturday) - numerous other fees for god knows what lots of $100+ procedures I even saw a $3.50 charge for waste disposal! 2 days after christmas and they want $900. If they could give her something that would actually solve the problem, I would have gladly forked over the money, but it was explained that if after all these expensive tests nothing was found they would refer us to the Emergency Vet in Wilmington. Paying that money just to be sent to pay likely twice that amount is ridiculous. So we opted for just the blood panel and the IV, which luckily was administered under the skin (where she could leave with us). 40 minutes later the blood panel came back great with only 1 thing being elevated (due to the dehydration) and we left $230 light and that night she was back to her old self. The papers they sent us home with said they found a dehydration issue (expected that) and a neurological issue, I don't see how they found a neurological issue when she passed all her testing, but i'm just relieved we didn't drop all that money when a simple IV dose was needed. Another issue is with the business itself. When bringing my dog from around the back, another person had to restrain their 2 pits who were struggling to get at her and every other dog that walked by. If your going to allow aggressive dogs in either require a muzzle, or provide certain areas for those types of pets. I don't want to fork over money just for her to get ripped up in the waiting room. If they had gotten loose it would have caused a way bigger problem then just the animals fighting. (TL:DR) Long story short, if your regular vet is closed and you need simple testing and procedures, Banfield is an ok place. If you feel your pet is having a major life/death issue go straight to the emergency vet in Wilmington; and save yourself unnecessary testing, money, and worry in the process, your pet and wallet will thank you!
I LOVE this location, they take care of me and all my fur babies and actually care. The ONE time I took a pet to a different vet out in town, they dismissed my concerns and sent my cat home, she died the next day. Banfield at least always test for everything and listen to all of our concerns and never brush off any of our concerns. Everyone complains about pricing, but pets aren't cheap. If you cant afford the work then don't get one, but don't talk down a vet office for charging you for the work you get. They are always very helpful and inform us of everything we need to know. We are in rescue so a lot of the animals we bring in have tons of medical issues that need to be tended to, and they've managed to save fur babies that we feared wouldn't make it, and now today all those babies are happy and healthy. At times the girls can come off as dismissive but that's usually during busy hours I've noticed when they're working on checking in 20+ animals plus sick walk-ins, I imagine that could be stressful, but they all care, and they go out of their way to make sure your pets are okay. They even ask us how the babies are doing when we come in just to pay for the plans we have. Being on a plan is a year contract, and you all know this before you sign up, so if you sign up anyways and rehome your pet or go forbid the baby dies, you signed a contract and what you're paying for that contract for one year is much less than what you would have paid had you paid everything out of pocket without any of the additional discounts that your plans give you. I have 4 pets on these plans one of which I don't have anymore, but I am still paying for until the year is up so her new owners can have coverage until then. They do care, you all have to keep in mind that while pet is important it's not their only client, they do everything they can, and they can only help you as much as youre willing to put forth, don't expect full vet care for free, if your pet is sick, expect to spend at least 200 on trying to get him better or don't get a pet.
This clinic is incompetent, uninformative, and unethically attempts to make you feel as if you are saving money when you are not. I have a veterinary sciences background and have worked many years as a small animal and large animal nurse. When a family pet was brought it for tapeworms they preformed a fecal test, de-wormed it and sent it home with an e-collar. Sounds great? Not when they were given documentation that the cat was de-wormed a week prior and had a fecal test at that time. It was a completely unnecessary and ill-timed re-diagnoses. It was obvious their were tape worms in the stool because previous treatment was fixing the problem. Furthermore, another cat was brought in for lack of appetite and lethargy. The cat had a fever of 104.5 and the owner was immediately told it should be hospitalized. They told her they wanted to run blood work. When she came to pick the cat up she was told that their machines were broken and a diagnoses via blood work was impossible. They brought her back the next day and she was told that hospitalization was necessary again as her temperature was still high. They barely communicated their reasoning and really didn't provide her any additional options. They told her that she was getting a discount. I called them immediately and asked if Subcutaneous fluids and monitoring at home would be a better and cheaper alternative to their suggestion. I was told that this was impossible to do because they couldn't give her medicine orally- reasoning that was completely unrelated and inconsequentially to what I was asking. When I pointed this out she stated it was actually because her temperature was high and they wanted it to come down before they gave her medicine. This is despite them telling us previously that no medicine would be given that day. It didn't add up.... They also said that they were giving us a great discount for the second day of hospitalization. I asked what this discount was. They told me they were only charging for hospitalization and the fluids. I told them that this didn't constitute as a discount compared to the first day of hospitalization. Reason being: they still had the same catheter in the cat, they didn't have to charge for an additional line or even an additional bag of fluids. There is no way that the cat used all this material the day prior, and if they knew she was coming back they could have conserved it. We came back and picked the cat up, and are taking her somewhere else for treatment and diagnosis. They suggested $750 worth of just tests (including radio-graphs). It was extreme and not properly explained as to why each test was necessary and what symptoms led them to this decision making process. It seemed like they were throwing a million darts and hoping they would stick (and throwing out our budget in the process). On top of that, their in-house lab machines were broken and they wouldn't have been able to diagnose her for up to 3 days. This place may be good for routine vaccines, but I highly discourage anyone from going here for anything more serious. Unless you want to be confused, broke, and frustrated.
I went in for a nail trimming with them for the first time today for my pet rabbit. when i made the appointment i made it clear all i wanted was the nail trim and was quoted at only $14, which i thought was great. while we were waiting to be called back the admittance staff were talking about where to put him, and i asked if we could go in a room by ourselves because this was his first time ever being handled by anyone but me and my husband. turns out they did a full exam without consulting and forced me to pay for it. granted, i liked the "exotic animal" vet and found out a valuable piece of information as far as caring for my rabbit, but i felt so disrespected. i was uncomfortable with the thought of going back to a place that will just do things on my animal without explaining what they are doing or what it would cost, or even asking me if its ok. BUT... i called they're customer service and explained what happened and they contacted the head of the hospital, who contacted me about an hour later and we worked out a resolve that made us both feel comfortable. i have an appointment for JUST a pedicure in 3 weeks that now i am confident will go smoothly and feel much better about bringing my animal back knowing that even if a couple people there i have to watched, but the company itself is eager to provide what is needed for a pet-parents' piece of mind.
Stay away. Poor customer service. Poor quality services. Paid for a surgery and when the surgery didnt work. I was told he was confident in doing it? So why did they continue to do the surgery? BECAUSE THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT QUANTITY NOT QUALITY.
