Their hours are clearly listed as 10-6 (on the website and on their door). I went in at 5:30 to take a look at a dog and when I asked to see him, they told me that they stop letting the dogs out 30 minutes before they close so I would have to come back tomorrow. When I asked if I could just interact with the dog for a second (to see if I even wanted to come back tomorrow) they told me no. I went back the next day and the pup wasn't around. I asked where he was and they told me that he was having surgery to be fixed and that I would need to come back tomorrow. Day 3- I decide to look at the website to see if my pup is still there and his picture is gone so I'm assuming he is too. Awesome. Not to mention there is another dog that is STILL on the website whom I've asked about twice who is apparently (pre-adopted) yet the website still has his smiling picture next the big bold words "AVAILABLE". Didn't seem like the staff is too concerned with actually providing any customer service to get their dogs adopted. I stood in the lobby while all the staff stared at their computers even though there's a handful of people standing in the lobby to be helped. Then when you approach them, they act surprised to see you. WILL NOT be returning- ever. I can get better service (not to mention a cheaper dog) from the animal welfare shelters.
I'm sure it's unpopular to say anything bad about a non-profit animal shelter, but... I've had as many as three dogs and three cats (currently three dogs and two cats). They are all rescues. My first dog was from a no-kill shelter in another state. Maybe my family is strange, but I tend to be the pet picker-outer. I had "permission" from my wife to get another dog, while she was away. I found a great dog, that would need surgery, and wanted to adopt her. I was told I could not, unless everyone in the family met the dog. I explained how our family was, and even offered to call my wife on her cell. Not good enough. I asked if the dog could be put on "hold", and I was told "no". Soon after, I told my story to a coworker. Coincidentally, she had recently been there, and wanted to put a dog on hold, and was told, "no". So she came back to see if the dog was still available, and was told it was "on hold" for somebody else. You see what I mean, right? To make matters more frustrating, I donated a car to Animal Humane that later sold for $800. I'm still glad I did, and this may seem irrelevant, but it did add a little insult to injury. And no, I didn't mention that to them when I was trying to adopt the dog. Not my style. I'm sure they do good work, but I feel as there are some there, that do not...and that perhaps it is politically incorrect to say anything negative about this organization even if there are things that are not done well. Oh yeah, I went and got a dog at the East Side Shelter, after being denied the dog at Animal Humane. He is somewhat "special needs" with bad rear leg. We've been heaping love on him for several years now.
I am a first time pet owner, but I've always been determined to have my own puppy. I went in several times to look at certain dogs, but it wasn't until my fourth visit that I met "Amos", a little black lab mix with a curled tail. He was perfect. I took him home the next day. I can't begin to describe how thankful I am for him and the humane society employees. They helped me find my companion. He is always with me, he checks on me in the shower, and guards the window by my bed (much to my chagrin). I have my forever dog and the best companion I could have ever asked for. His new name is Laz short for Lazaretto, and everyone that meets him loves him entirely. Thank you for my forever dog. I highly recommend coming here to find the perfect animal for you.
Just over all a bad experience was lied to, manipulated, and insulted. Would not recommend anyone ever go here. FYI they euthanize for kennel cough and they call themselves "no kill." If your pet is adoptable/cute it will survive if not, well, best of luck. If it gets sick it's dead.
I adopted my first dog from Animal Humane New Mexico in October 2008, and he is such an incredible dog that when my husband and I were ready to bring home another canine child we went back and brought home a second dog in April 2011. Both experiences were top notch, and both of my dogs are wonderful loving family pets. They love all people, dogs and cats, and they are both male pit bulls! Animal Humane has taught me so much and brought so much love into my home. I can't imagine my life without my dogs, and I can't imagine New Mexico without a wonderful resource such as Animal Humane.
