This Hospital is amazing, with great vets. I had the opportunity as a visitor to utilize, and although the outcome was not good they were pleasant , and understood my grief. Thank You Dr Chris Anderson !!!! You Guys rock!!!!!

My regular vet at Northside was closed so I took my dog to Smith's for heartworm preventative meds. Big mistake. After a very impolite and unprofessional vet tech called Jenna refused to help me weigh my dog, Dr Smith peered through the glass and said 'I'll take the next one Jenna.' Then I got a red-eyed male vet who rushed through a 'check-up' (cursory touch of stethoscope on dogs belly), and offered fluids. I wish I hadn't bothered purchasing anything from them. I'd still pay for the 'check-up' just because - but not any extras. I wont ever go to anyone but Dr Heyman again. You don't need the weird vibe this place gives off. The receptionist kept my debit card behind the counter while she went off to get my dog's meds. Then she watched the screen intently, presumably for a decline. They sure do judge people on appearances, and make it known you are not welcome ...I guess if they think you don't fit in. I will never go back. YUCK.

I have never seen the negativity described by others here. I've had two dogs under Smith's care, with no complaints. When the first, Foster, had to be put down at age 17, they couldn't have been nicer. Dr Brear has been a great help in dealing with the brucellosis our present dog arrived from rescue with. So far she (the dog) has been living a normal life for about the last five years.

Always get a second opinion. I took my 4 month old female beagle puppy to smith because she had been eating grass and was vomiting. It was early in the morning and my normal vet, Stan Heyman, was not open yet. The vets at Smith suggested taking x-rays. The x-rays showed that there was a mass in her stomach. After seeing the mass, Smith suggested keeping her for 3-4 hours, giving her IV fluids and seeing if she could pass the mass through her digestive track. After 2 hours, nothing was moving. The next suggestion was to administer Barium Sulfate to better track the movement of matter through her digestive track. At this point I was told that if there was no movement of the mass, surgery would be the next step. I was told that it would be necessary to surgically open her abdominal cavity, and cut open her stomach to remove the mass. I was shocked by this radical approach. I asked the vets if they could use some type of scope or fiber optics to view the mass prior to performing surgery. I was told that the scope they had would not be capable of removing the mass. After thinking about this, I determined it was time to get a second opinion. I called our regular vet, Sta Heyman, Dr. Heyman agreed that this seem to be a radical approach to him as well and suggested that the puppy be scoped prior to performing surgery. Again, I mentioned the scoping concept to Smith and again I was informed that it would be useless. I called Dr. Heyman back and Dr. Heyman suggested that I call Dr. Bob Gruda at Gruda Veterinary Hospital for a second opinion. Dr. Gruda was able to schedule an appointment and see us immediately. I returned to Smith and discharged the puppy and received a complete medical file and proceeded to Gruda Hospital. Dr. Gruda immediately saw us, reviewed the medical file and made his recommendations. First, he told me in his opinion, the barium was not even necessary as it would determine nothing. The total bill at Smith was $698.00. Second thing he said was that Smith did not have the necessary scopes and fiber optics to remove the mass from her stomach. I was shocked to hear that. I still can't imagine why Smith would not have referred me to another vet that had the equipment necessary to make a complete assessment of the puppy's condition prior to a significant surgery. Dr. Gruda performed a scoping procedure the next morning, was able to remove all of the matter in her stomach. $400.00 procedure and I took her home. I will never take any of my animals to Smith ever again.
