Now don't take my rating the wrong way, the facility is beautiful and clean - most of the animals seem to be in good care and some of their staff is friendly and concerned. However, my rating is for ill animals/special needs animal. In my opinion DO NOT get an ill or special needs animal from this group. They give you thirty days of vet aid to find out what is wrong/continually wrong/new illnesses and from that point on they will not help you in the slightest. I adopted a jack russel/whippet mix from them 3 years ago. I love her dearly but she's epileptic - on phenobarbital, the works. From the minute I took her home she's dealt with incontinence (something they hadn't warned or told me about) and though I brought up that concern within the 30 day period it was never addressed. I solved the issue myself by removing all snacks and excessive salt from her diet. As the years went by however, her dosage of phenobarbital has had to go up and her incontinence increased ten fold. To worsen our situation and her quality of life, within the last few months she's started having frequent seizures again and increasing the pheno has only compounded the problem - making her anxious, paranoid, and confused. My current vet says this is a sure sign that she is having an allergic reaction or adverse effect from the meds and needs to be moved to a different med, just as effective, but much more expensive. The problem is that I am a recently single woman, with extensive medical bills/student loans of my own to pay off and can simply not pay for the new meds and especially can not take the time off from work to help my canine through the process of finding out what combo/dosage of meds work together - if the Humane Society had addressed the "adverse effects" at the beginning I would have been with my partner still and could have managed the time and money needed to get my dog to a decent/healthy state. To make things worse, I contacted the Humane Society 2 weeks ago to see if they could assist at all - not for paying for her meds but allowing me to discuss the issue with their vets (who had dealt with her for years up til now - while avoiding the pricey bills of just talking to my vet...) or possibly setting up a foster that could watch her long term while my vet and I figured out her meds. After waiting to hear back from them for 3 days, the only response I received was a short voice mail stating they would not help in any way. They didn't give me any resources, names of those who could help... nothing. For a group that totes a strong morality - they were completely heartless. Fast forward a week later, the vet has been absent minded and indecisive, my dog has had 4 seizures in a single day, making her partially paralyzed on one side, I've spent over 600 dollars (my rent money) at the Animal ER and I go in personally to appeal to the Humane Society for help. Nothing. Their animal "returns" manager gave me 2 minutes of her time to tell me how I could crowd source to get funding for the meds, give up my animal, or that I should consider putting my animal down. For a non kill shelter, there was no mercy, no kindness, and not even a decent amount of time given to hearing the situation. I wont be working with NHS anymore, and I would not suggest getting ill/special needs animals from them ever. They're not there for the ill animal, and they don't care enough to try to keep them in a forever home. NHS, you messed up with this one.
Disappointed with the outcome . How’s this for an experience with Nevada Humane Society; I’m trying to be socially responsible, so my family and I go to the shelter to find a dog. Saturday Nov 01 we find 2 dogs to adopt and are given adoption cards with id #’s Tuesday Nov 04, we go back to shelter & speak with adoption manager, fill out paperwork to adopt 2 dogs. Adoption manager said shelter would either call this afternoon or tomorrow to tell me when to pick up dogs. She tells me we are first in line for one and second for the other. Tuesday Nov 04 female named Chef or Shasta left me a voice mail saying one dog that we asked for ending in 125 wasn’t available, but the second # 198372 or 37298 was and we could pick it up Weds. Weds Nov 04, 1:00 I call and speak with Shelby she finds my name in the computer & tells me to come by at 3:30 to pick up dog or call first. She even gave me the id # and told me the name of the dog “Posey”. 3:30 we call again before driving down. The person that answers phone looks our information up, finds us again in computer and says dog is ready “yes, come on down” 4:00 -We show up to pick up dog first they say " sorry we just let someone else adopt the dog" . I tell them” that is impossible and ask to get the records straight-at this point they refuse to look us up in computer and just say “sorry”. I ask to talk to who made this decision and the dog manager comes out. He says that he gave the dog to someone else because the dog wasn’t in the computer. He says the person that adopted the dog saw it “today” & he told them they could have it. I ask him how they saw it today when it was getting spayed and he changes his story to “they have been following the dog and called today and I spoke to them. “ I ask him how is that I called at 1:00 , Shelby took my call , found me in the computer and told me the dog was registered to me . She even gave me the dog’s name and dog number. He couldn’t answer and just said sorry I gave it to someone else. I asked where the dog was and he said someone was in the process of adopting it. I asked him to stop the adoption, but he refused saying the person was there now to adopt the dog. I asked to talk to the manager Denise Stevens and ask to stop the adoption, but she refused and had no desire to help me. She says our name was never in the computer and she’s sorry. She blames it on the adoption manager who wasn’t there. Our name was in computer, It was confirmed 3 times. This is a terrible way to run a business, I can assure I won’t be back or donate to the NV Humane Society again until they figure it out. I wasn't very nice to them at the end. They need to know this is wrong. The truth is , this was a very beautiful puppy and someone pulled some strings to get it .
Adopted a dog here about two weeks ago. The poor little thing had been brought in as a stray, when I got her she had just been spayed, was advised she had a UTI. Turns out she had bladder stones, they did the surgery free of charge, and gave me prescription food for her. Can't say enough good things about this place. If you want an animal adopt, adopt from the Humane Society of Northern Nevada. Only suggestion is a little better communication, they are difficult to get on the phone.
I had the worst experience, I found a young dog (poodle) last Friday and turned her in to Animal Services hoping she would be claimed by her owner, I let them know I wanted to adopt her if she was not claimed, they said they would keep her for 5 days and then turn her over to the Humane Society to be put up for adoption. Since I was the "finder" they told me to let the Humane Society know right away that I was interested, which I did that same Friday. The Humane Society told me they would call me as soon as she was ready to go after getting spayed and what not. I called exactly on the 5th day and they said she was not with them yet, to call the next day. I called the next day, I gave them the animal id they she was given initially and they could not pull her up, so I called animal services and they confirmed she was in fact turned over to them on the fifth day on 10/8/14. I called the Humane Society at 12:30 again on 10/9/14, to find out she was given a new animal id, I again told them I wanted to adopt her, they told me she was not ready yet, she needed to get spayed and groomed, they girl said she would probably get spayed that day or the next (today) and that they would Call me. I was anxious about bringing her home so I called today again around noon, only to find out that she was in the middle of getting Adopted!! My heart sunk :( I was told one of the managers (Art) "called" and left a "message" at both of my cell numbers on the 10/8/14. I went in person to speak to a manager about this and clarified to her that I never received a call or message, I checked both my husbands and my cell, no missed call or message. While I was there the dog was getting picked up by the other people, apparently they were explained the situation and they still wanted to go through with the adoption. I called and spoke with their director Kevin Ryan, he backed up his manager 100% and said "Art would not lie about calling" I can not believe how these people work. To add to this while I was there they said the animals are only on hold for 1 hour, the director then told they are on hold until the end of their closing time, this was never communicated to me on the 4 times I called! he also said it should stated on the form I was given by them on Friday, the day I found her, I read him the paper and it clearly does not have that information, he confirmed that is not on the form I was given and he later apologized. Once I got home I told my sister what happened and found out, they did the same thing to her over 1 year ago, with a kitten! Exact same thing, word by word, she was told as I was. I honestly think their manager or a staff member or someone they know adopted her, this is very wrong. My kids and I are truly upset, as she had spent that afternoon I found her with us and we all got along great.
Amazing place. Spotlessly clean and so well staffed. I was greeted the moment I walked into the door. I learned so much speaking to staff members and nagging them with questions, which they graciously and warmly answered. They have created a no-kill community and take in the vast majority of our communities animals. I am so impressed, I have never considered myself an animal shelter person, but I am now. I have since done a bunch of background and these guys are no joke. They are one of the best animal groups in the country, pretty much everyone agrees. I cannot believe this place exists in Northern Nevada!
