I moved away from the east coast in 1990, but I was a client of Dr. Dentler when the clinic first opened over 25 years ago. I don't know if she is still there, but as far as I was concerned, she was a wonderful veterinarian for ALL of my cats. She was compassionate, obviously loved the animals and never treated any of my cats roughly or in an uncaring way. I'm astonished by the negative reviews I've read here. My experience was that not onlly Dr. D was wonderful but her staff was equally sensitive and caring.

From the receptionists welcome, we were already sold...Our now dying and we think inadequately handled cat had finally, but too late found the right team1...A mature, caring, personal approach from everyone.... Any vet who will come to the home to help a cat is a sure thing..We felt we could call Dr Robert Gooden anytime to ask about our cats welfare... Dr Gooden found our cat to be in anorexia from the struggles he'd endured with emergency organisations, to careless mis diagnosing, over prescription of three different drugs...The cat was already very thin when first presented to emergency..No regular follow up calls about its welfare..Particularly after the steroids were administered....The steroids had no affect on his condition and helped to worsen the anorexia,as did cerenia and appetite stimulant..The cat reacted badly to the drug treatment..We felt as if were intruding when we called on a few occasions. These diseases, granted, are not easily treated...The systems are stretched ..... We feel that teams like those at Sixth ave Animal clinic, provide what the animal needs not the owner....Quick fixes are not OK for small animals..Nutritional education, personal approach, individual case needs, and the tempered use of drugs as strong as Steroids..etc A little pain med for a dying animal is probably as much as can be handled..All the organs are degenerated with drug therapy and not all animals can handle it....The vets are still experimenting with all of this and the owners of course are in the dark too.....Difficult....I believe a more natural death is better, with fluids, diet, pain med, and vitamins..Drug companies and food company's seem to have a hold on the veterinary world.. One size doesn't fit all.......Our cat was a distressed fellow from a terrible fate as a kitten and didn't deserve more suffering at the end of its life....We all have our stories, but we felt as if we weren't just a number on your list.....Well done....I hope this can help you assess the life and death of more precious creatures.... Our cat knew that in the hands of most humans he was doomed, he knew we were going to take its life......At least we all worked together, in a gentle caring quiet fashion and helped end his struggle and extreme discomfort while he was so depleted and weakened, he couldn't object......He surrendered.......Animals know everything...RIP little fellow......

Dr. Dendtler and her impeccable staff saved our dog’s life. This is an incredible and moving story of what separates an experienced, attentive healer from any well-trained clinician, so we’ll start from the beginning. We moved away from NYC two years ago, but continue to return to Dr. D for routine care for our aging, but healthy and happy family dog, Toots. When Toots had a rapid-onset loss of appetite and lethargy, we took her to a local vet, and then on to an Emergency and Speciality care facility. She was admitted with a fever over 105, high enough to put her at risk for severe blood clotting and organ failure. We could not identify any toxin she may have ingested, and started on intravenous fluids and antibiotics to try and bring the fever down, in addition to a spattering of diagnostics. Of course we reached out to Dr. Dendtler, who was immediately all-in via frequent phone consultations, confering with the emergency vets, and patiently explaining Toots’ condition to us in terms we could actually understand. After almost 3 days of intravenous medication, her fever was not coming down, and we were caught between pressure from the local emergency vets to perform invasive tests, and frustration that Toots continued to suffer a dangerous fever. Dr. Dendtler literally pleaded with these vets to exhaust all therapies to bring down the fever and get some food in her, like cold compresses and gentle oral feeding through a syringe. These were no doubt well-trained clinicians with access to the most modern diagnostics and cancer treatments, but their solution for a high fever was to aim a fan at our sick dog. We wanted Toots out of there, and Dr. Dendtler told us that she’ll be with us all the way while we nursed Toots at home with non-invasive therapies the emergency vets assured us ‘wouldn’t amount to a hill of beans.’ Well, Dr. Dendtler was true to her word, and coached us through tepid baths every 2 hours, special high-calorie ‘milkshakes,’ temperature monitoring, in addition to ol’ fashioned tender loving care, and Toots’ fever fell to normal after 3 days of being home. It was a moving experience for my partner and I to nurse our helpless, sick, sweet dog back to health and vitality. Dr. Dendtler continues to check-in with us every week -- like she said in the beginning, she’s “with us for the long haul.” A caring and thoughtful doctor is truly a healer, and we are so grateful to Dr. D and her supportive staff. Her approach to medicine is both patient and decisive, from years of experience and practice, and she is truly a healer and beloved part of the Brooklyn community.

We recently adopted a dog. The dog was brought into this veterinarians office to be put down and the staff decided to instead put the dog up for adoption. Upon receiving the dog it had a slight limp which we were told was a sprain. We were also told the dog was examined and given shots, everything was great! After we accepted the dog and brought it in for a follow up one week later we were told it had a torn ACL and needed surgery of 2-5k. The dog had also exhibited some odd behaviour and her teeth had seemed to be going a bit bad. We were told "no problem". On the third visit, we were told contrary to what we had been told before that the dogs odd behaviour was a likely sign of worms, that her teeth required surgery etc. etc. We were also told she had never received shots or correct treatment and the poor dog was given these. We received a bill of over $800 for this. I've owned many pets all adopted over the years and all have lived full and fruitful lives. I have never seen such a display of bad practice, misinformation and outright ineptitude this office displays. If you bring your animal here expect to wait hours to get random and expensive medical care that may or may not be valid.
