This place is a disaster. I don’t care how much I spend for the health of my pet, but the waiting, waiting and more waiting for the appointment, blood work results and good advice is like pulling out teeth one by one. I’m not talking about waiting because things aren’t complete. I’m talking about waiting because after they already started the exam in the back, they fill the front exam room with a new patient to make more money and then you wait a second time to have a room to find out what happened. That’s IF you get another front room. They will just talk to you on the bench if they see fit, not the kind of exam follow-up I’d expect for $180 basic appointment. Then, the blood work, despite any acute need for your pet, if your examining doctor is not in until Friday, you wait until Friday. It’s disgusting. This is not personal or top care folks, this is a chop shop. Turning and burning pets for costs 700% above typical vets. For this cost, I expect exceptional and personal care. As far as the good advice…your best off keeping your local vet, this place is a bunch of 'well we could’ and then more and more specialists with what? The same advice you can get at your local vet if they read journal articles for $50. Keep your pet safe and stay away from here unless you need surgery or have a life threatening emergency. And as far as the interns….self-entitled practice artists. Do you want your pet being practiced on?
I understand it is an old NYC building, but your walking into a hospital that is dirty and overcrowded, the wait was over 6 hours for our dog and he did not get anesthesia! Its staffed with lots of Interns who do not pass the correct information regarding your dogs issues to the doctor...or any one of the many doctors who might end up seeing them. They also lost my original helpful medications for my dog. The Dispensary and Cashiers department are the most helpful, but there is only so much they can do, the place is a meat market its just to big, delivering conflicting and poor overall service.
When a pet becomes ill it is seriously stressful and deeply saddening when the unthinkable happens. One year ago we took our 'beloved' Napoleon, a rescue French Bulldog that had been part of our family for 6 years, to AMC in the middle of the night. He was uncomfortable, finding it hard to breath and most definitely not himself. A growth the size of a small grapefruit was found and surgery was required. Not great for a 10-11 year old dog! Everybody at AMC, from the reception staff to the doctors were incredible, tolerated our need to be 'out back' with him as much as possible, open and honest on the prognosis and passionate about doing everything possible. A year later Napoleon is still with our family and determined to grow old disgracefully. While we know one day the outcome will be very different and it will be his time we wont hesitate to entrust Napoleon's care to the wonderful staff of AMC.
We were referred to AMC for a cardiac consultation for our twenty year old cat Yoshi, who our family vet suspected was experiencing heart failure. Dr. Dennis Trafny and Dr. Samantha Schlemmer were both understanding and professional in examining him and conducting tests, which showed that his heart was not the cause of his problems. Last night it became clear that our time with Yoshi was coming to an end (for reasons other than his heart). We brought him in to AMC, and after discussing the situation with Dr. Christine Choe, decided that the most humane thing to do would be to put him to sleep. Everyone at AMC, including the front desk personnel, nurses, techs, assistants, Drs. Trafny and Schlemmer, and cashiers, was warm and compassionate, but we want to give a special thank you to Dr. Choe. She helped us through a very painful decision with warmth and compassion and ensured that everything went as smoothly as it can go when saying goodbye to a much loved family member. I would not hesitate to recommend AMC to anyone, as our experiences there (though sad due to the purpose of our visits) were first-class. And especially thank you to Dr. Choe.
We took our dog to some of the best vets in New York, including one of the world's most highly regarded specialists in his field and AMC as consistently taken the best care and showed the most concern about the dog. Emails are responded to promptly (including late in the evening) and questions answered honestly and quickly. After dealing with vets who either refuse to give email addresses or don't return calls (and some that don't want to deal with a sick pup), this place is a godsend.
