My pet bunny, Ivy, recently decided to get very, very sick several times in two months. Avian and Exotics took excellent care of us. Ivy often went in as an ER and was always seen quickly. The staff are friendly and genuinely care. They were upfront with diagnosis and treatment options, cost estimates, and never made me feel as if I were over reacting. Katie-Jo and Dr. Brown even stayed late one night so I could bring Ivy in. Ivy and I would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Brown, Katie-Jo, and Anita.

We own two Black Capped Conures. The male is 9 years old and the female is 8 years old. I have been taking them to see Dr. Anthony Pilny since each were 3 months of age. They receive regular well birdie checks. They have had blood drawn for these exams many times. My female has been brought in on two occasions for emergency visits. I also worked with the other doctors at the Center when I volunteered at a now closed public garden that housed pet hooked billed birds, doves, finches and rabbits. When I was a newbie bird owner, Lorelei Tibbets, practice manager and head of the Center's nursing staff actually came into our home to help with some challenging behavior our little bird was exhibiting. I feel very confident in saying that NYC and bird owners (indeed all exotic pet owners) are fortunate to have a facility like the Center for Avian and Exotic here. I only wish more people who own exotic pets would make regular trips there for exams and check ups and talk with (and LISTEN TO) the staff for advice that would possibly improve the quality of their beloved pet's life while he/she is well. In all the years we have had blood drawn from birds here, we have never EVER had a bad experience. Indeed, we have only met professionals who are not only highly competent but caring and concerned individuals. While our personal preference is, without a doubt, Dr. Pilny, the other doctors currently at the Center are very good indeed. Having said all that, I will admit that even the best avian and exotic professional is not a magician (much as I wish they were!) nor are they G-ds. Today they know so much more about how to keep our wonderful pets intellectually stimulated, happy and healthy - but there is still so much more doctors just don't know. Pets can pass away - even with the best care. However, I firmly believe when you bring your avian or exotic pet to these fine professionals at this Center, you are undoubtedly giving them the best chance for a healthy life. For us, the money we spend here is money well spent. I am looking forward to the next 20 (I hope) years with our sweet little birds. I thank Dr. Pilny in particular and the staff at the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine for helping us do just that.

Save yourself the trouble and perhaps your pets life and stay away from this place as there are plenty of professional dedicated doctors around town to have to deal with this place. I brought in my pet who was ill in hope for an emergency treatment. My pet was examined and blood test taken. I was promised a call the next day with result and recommendations. The call never came. When I called to inquire I was told the doctor did not come in that day to wait till the next day. Well the call never came on the second day either. When I called the office I had to deal with a surly unhelpful receptionist who seem to be an expert in covering up for a bunch of unprofessional doctors who like to take your money but don't believe they have the responsibility to a call back. I was lied to about a doctor who will call me for 2 days. Finaly at the end of the day the receptionist tells me that another Dr. has e-mailed me. Not sure how an e-mail is going to save my pets life. I have wasted my money $338 and mostly I have wasted a precious time where my pet had a fighting chance to where he now had even less chance of survival as time was running out. In another words they charge me for the blood test but never bothered to treat my pet in any way and did not see anything wrong with this. I had to put him to sleep since he was not treated and was suffering. RIP Stewie. The 5 star ratings for this place are fake.

They ask you to do all these exams that are unnecessary and inconclusive... you do it because you love your pet. They come back with no diagnosis and it leaves you broke, with a laundry list of potential illnesses, and a sick pet. I was only impressed by their courteous demeanor and how they handled my bird. They do check for health records before boarding your bird and they seem pretty reputable in the sanitary department. I wish I had a better experience and it wasn't highway robbery. I would stick to a general check up, grooming, and boarding here.

I brought my indian ringneck here a couple of years back because of the good ratings..... Had to board him for a trip I was taking but he had to have an check-up along with a few exams. The staff was nice and all, check up went well but I got a funny feeling when they had to bring him to the back to draw his blood, I didn't feel comfortable and got a funny feeling. Any way, came back from the back and we were done. Got home, took him out of his kennel and place him on top of his cage/top play pin and he sneezed blood 3 times on the wall! Freaked out, called them and they explained it was fine and normal and that he wasn't in danger and told me something on how sensitive birds are and all. Went to the Humane Society of NY on 59th St betwn 1st and 2nd ave (see my review) to see another avian doctor and asked him if sneezing blood was normal and he got bothered and said that it wasn't normal! I was so livid. Also, when I took my bird, his wings were incorrectly clipped by someone I knew around my way that had 20 birds all her life. I didn't clip them myself cause my bird doesn't stay still and I didn't want to hurt him. Took my bird into another room to clip them and is when I realized something was wrong. During the check up, the "vet" told me my bird's wing's were clipped incorrectly. She had asked my permission if she could take pictures and i said sure. Little did I know, she NOR THE BUSINESS ITSELF asked my permission to post them on facebook or on the internet for that matter and basically I was bashed like there was no tomorrow. I would have never given them permission to post them on the net being that I didn't see the woman clip the wings in front of me and realizing after it happened it looked wrong. All in all, the place is nice and all the staff is okay, experienced a few unpleasant things here and there, definitely NOT pleased about them posting up my bird's photos without my permission (there's a HUGE difference when asking to take a pic and asking permission to post them on the net so my lawyer's looking into it) and they are super pricey! If you "have the money", great but realistically, you can get the same exam for a lot cheaper. At Humane Society I paid $153 for the check-up and exams. At Avian and Exotics I paid $437 for the same thing! Do the math and if you want to save money and bad experiences like the other Google reviews, go to the Humane Society. Avian and Exotics are all about the money and look at my review for "Humane Society of NY" on Google. They also attend to cats and dogs. Also, want to board your bird, check out Bird Camp.
