The new vet said the antibiotics they prescribed were unnecessary, probably just made my pet more resistant to bacteria. From what the new vet said, his diagnosis and treatment were wrong. She called the medication I was prescribed "old school". The new vet also disagreed with his diagnosis of gum disease, said it was natural coloring. The doctor ignored my repeated requests to return my call, tried to relay everything through the desk staff, but they couldn't answer what I asked and he couldn't spare two minutes on the phone. I think going there just prolonged my pet's suffering and wasted my money.
Update: I decided to give Mandel Vet another chance and brought my two cats there for their annual physical and rabies vaccines. We had a good experience and will be returning next year. The staff were very kind and helpful, even helping carry my cats two and from my car. Dr. Scott Smith was very good with both of them, and made a towel hiding place on the table for my scaredy-cat so he could hang out while the other one had his exam. Only con is that their nail trims are a bit pricey at $20 a pop. First review; I recently moved to Cleveland and brought my cat in after noticing blood in his urine. I have mixed feelings about our experience and am unsure whether we'll return. Positive: - I was able to get an immediate appointment, despite being a new patient. - The staff were friendly and very kind to me and my cat. They took my concerns seriously and were happy to answer questions. - When had a question after the appointment, I was able to speak to the vet we'd seen and get clarification. Negative: - The vet took my cat to another room to take a urine sample. When they returned, he explained that he hadn't been able to get a sample and had performed three treatments that we hadn't discussed (at a cost of $90). I would have consented to these treatments had he asked and explained his reasoning in advance, but I was dismayed that he didn't feel it was necessary to discuss treatment options with me. - The vet prescribed prazasin tablets for my cat, and instructed me to split the tablets and give half every 12 hours. When I asked if these could be obtained at any pharmacy, he assured me that it was a very common human medication and would be readily available. However, when I went to the pharmacy, I discovered that prazosin is only available in capsule form in the US (tablets are available in the UK). I had to delay starting treatment for 12 hours while the pharmacist tried to reach the vet to determine if I could split the capsules. More importantly, I'm concerned that a vet prescribing this med wouldn't know what forms are available in this country.
If I could give zero stars I would. Maybe Dr. West is good with cats and dogs. But its a shame she calls herself an avian vet. She didn't catch 99% of the things that were eventually the demise of my beloved parakeet. She actually passed him off as back to normal. Later taking him to Dr. Lindstrom it was discovered that my parakeet had many digestive problems that should have been found in the gram stain. Her mistake was fatal. Not to mention she doesn't even stay in the room long enough for you to ask questions and understand all that she is saying for treatment (etc.). Another thing, Midwest Veterinary Hospital also uses very strong smelling cleaning products and air fresheners. You can NOT justify using those products while you're accepting avian patients. An avian vet should understand that those products are FATAL to birds and should refrain from using them. The vet techs were nice, I suppose. Although they knew practically nothing about birds. Never going back again.
Great experience overall! Dr. Scott Smith was very thorough and explained everything. I felt very involved in my dogs treatment. My 6 yr old Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has had aggression issues with strangers since he was a puppy. Being new to the area I was reluctant to bring him to a new vet. I am glad I did though. Dr Scott Smith seems to genuinely care. Most importantly my dog had a great experience.
We have been seen by 2 different doctors at Mandel Vet for annual checkups/vaccinations/heartworm testing for our Great Dane and both have provided great service to us. Most recently, we saw Dr. Walker and I cannot say enough good things about her. Typically, our Dane has anxiety problems at the vet and does not do well if I'm not in the room, but the nurse was able to take her back for blood work without me and said she did great. Dr. Walker and the nurse spent plenty of introduction time with us, greeting our dog and helping her warm up to them, since she was visibly anxious. Our Dane was able to become the most at ease I've seen her at the vet in 5 years, thanks to this extra effort. Additionally, Dr. Walker listened to my concerns about a specific vaccine, took time to answer all my questions, and didn't try to offer me any services that she didn't think my dog needed (i.e. a dental cleaning, which I've felt that other vets have unnecessarly recommended). As a result of the blood sample taken from our dog's neck (which they usually take from her leg), our dog developed a hematoma, which disappeared before we left. We noticed it returned later that evening and called the office, which instructed us what to do. When we were concerned the next day that it might still be present, Dr. Walker encouraged us to drop by, even though the office was closing, so that she could personally take a look at it. It turned out that the hematoma was gone, but Dr. Walker graciously and patiently handled our drop-in, assuring us that she would rather us bring in our dog than be worried that something was wrong. I am so pleased with the service and would recommend this veterinary office to anyone.
