I recently read other reviews on here about affordable vet care and I've been taking my dog here for about 6 years after she broke out constantly with blisters, ear infections, and skin irritations. we went to 4 different vets that wanted to run very costly blood test and allergy tests we spent well over 1000 in 6 months trying to figure out why she had such problems trying expensive "high quality" or prescription foods with no results. This was a last hope for our at the time 11 month old cocker spaniel. Dr Uhram was very direct with us when he seen her. He told us only purina small bits dog food, only carrots and apples for treats and nothing else and she was to be washed in selsum blue dandruff shampoo only....did we walk out of there thinking he was crazy and maybe a little socially ackward? YES!! he ran no test gave a small prescription for antibiotic and an e collar and the very instructions listed above, we followed them and in 7 days our dog was cleared up her beautiful coat was back and since then has had minimal break outs...which can always be traced back to her eating something that was not within the Doctor's direct guidelines. Dr Urhams office is small and his way of communicating is very direct and to some people might say rude...but I assure you he is not he cares about animals and he offers quality care without expensive testing. and to the comment about the him sticking his finger in the dogs ear and saying their was a yeast infection, yes that's basically how he works he looks at animal and what symptoms are there and treats it without charging crazy unnecessarily fees. The first visit cost us less then $100 for everything (including the stop on the way home for different dog food) when we spent $200 plus at other vets each visit with no results and each wanting us to come back in 2 weeks for a check and possibly more testing. With the pain med comment he does give pain meds when needed, our dog is now 7 years old and had an injury to her knee that we didn't even have to tell him about he felt it when he examed her and he said it will cause her some pain as she gets older and could cause her irritably so he gave us a prescription (that we could fill at kroger to save us money) and told us to give her a very small does each day to help with inflammation and pain. He doesn't give pain meds after getting fixed i'm guessing because then animals will feel no pain and run around when they should be resting because that's what my dog did on pain meds and almost ripped out stitches. If you want some who will be honest with you and not waste your time or money and you can get over the not so pretty office and just trust what he says you will not be disappointed.
The person above who says that animals do not feel pain should not be allowed to own pets. Basically you are saying that it is ok to torture animals. If you have never worked in a clinic and watched an animal recover from surgery you should probably not weigh in your opinion on whether your pet feels pain or not. My experience at this clinic was average, as the rating indicates. Went with a friend. We found another clinic with services that better fit our needs
Definantly a no frills doctor. The office and exam aera is seperated by a cubical wall. It appears to be minimally equipped. If you are feeding you dog anything but Purina expect them to tell you the food is no good, and noo dog treats of any kind(fresh carrots and peas or a few peices of dog food for treats). The vet didn't weigh my dog which is odd to me because he gave medicine to the puppy. I was expecting a little more thorough exam. At one point he stuck his finger into the pups ear and told me he had a yeast infection. I'm not a vet, but would think that it would take more to diagnose that. Over all not a BAD place but would not recomend it for new pup/kitten. Would be great for someone with and older pet they've had for a while just wanting to get shots or minamal care.
The office is not the most glamorous you have ever seen, but the service is wonderful. I take two cats and one dog there and have never left unhappy. We just had our puppy spayed yesterday and Dr Uhrman was so nice about our concerns. He gave us his cell number and said that with any issues we are to call him, even in the middle of the night. How many vets would do this? The person who was complaining about pain meds does not know what they are talking about (maybe all hopped up on vicodin themselves? :] ). Dogs definitely do not feel pain like humans, and owning a very active puppy myself I should know. I have seen her take headers into walls, furniture and even the sharp corners of the heavy oak coffee table without even a blink. Our dog whines and moans but because she is pinned up, not from pain. She does not seem to feel much pain at all, she wants to get out and run around and do all the things puppies do. I have heard and seen complaints about Dawn (the woman at the front desk), but the fact about her is; she sugar coats nothing. She tells you how it is, even if you do not like it and what could happen to your animal if you mess up. She may not have the best of customer service skills, but I will always pay attention to her directions. She knows what she is talking about! If you like paying out the rear for the same service you will get here, then feel free. It is your loss.
I took my 5 month old puppy here after the review that I saw on the internet, and thought I'd find a great vet at a great price. Unfortunately, you don't get much of a discount to make the poor quality worth it. My puppy was spayed and although they sent her home with antibiotics, she received no pain meds. When I had asked about the pain meds, the nurse said animals don't feel pain like us, so she doesn't need them. I took her home, and the next day, my dog was still in a lot of pain...so I called the doctor back. I asked them to please prescribe pain meds, I'd gladly pay for them. They wouldn't prescribe them. Tommorrow morning I'm making an appointment with a new vet that will acknowledge the importance of pain relief in animals, and not treat their human customers in such a rude manner.
