I do not even understand the negative reviews. I have been taking my animals to Dr. Barney for 20 years. When I moved away from Lakewood, I still make a 20 minute drive to bring my animals back to him as he is, by far, the best vet in the area and his staff is caring, considerate, helpful and always willing to accommodate even a suspected emergency on the schedule. There have been plenty of times over the years when I have called and was unsure whether my pet was having a serious problem or could wait and they would shuffle things, ask the doctor to stay late, or otherwise squeeze them in. Dr. Barney has provided care for 4 of my cats and two of my dogs and their care has been outstanding. He is always available to answer questions, even when his staff tries to shelter him from them. He calls at home after any treatment, procedure or test to update us or check on my animal's condition. I am sad that he is approaching retirement and do hope that he retires after my animals do because I don't know who I would have see them in his absence. Additionally, it is touching that he has donated so much of his time to caring for animals at the various local shelters.
Calvin had been treated at Lakewood Animal Hospital ever since he was four months old. Calvin died at 5:00 am on March 5, 2013 at the age of 13 even though he had been at the hospital at approximately 6:00 pm on March 4. I brought Calvin in on January 31 because he had become withdrawn and was not eating. I was assigned to Lori Koenig who gave him some antibiotics and fluids, took an x-ray and told me to keep him away from my other cat in case he had something contagious. She called later and said they think they see a shadow on the x-ray and he should have an ultrasound. I told her we would wait to see if the antibiotics helped. She said okay. After Calvin’s death I found out that the x ray report had said, “The distended abdomen and loss of serosal detail is consistent with accumulation of free fluid, carcinomatosis, or peritonitis…” Koenig had plenty of opportunities to let me know what was wrong with Calvin but she never did. I called on March 2 because Calvin was getting so sick, and they told me to take him to Brookpark Animal Emergency Clinic. The doctor there said it seems like he has cancer. When I brought him back to Koenig March 4 she acted like this was my fault! What a pathetic excuse for a doctor. I spent $276.75 at Lakewood Animal Hospital on January 31, mostly on an x-ray report that I did not get the results of until after Calvin’s death; I spent a total of $904, for Calvin to die a horrible, miserable death from cancer.
Only going back to get what I paid for. I've gone twice both times for my cat. The first time I went, I was talked down to. From there I dont care what kind of service you can offer - I am a paying customer! You need "us" to keep a business going. After that visit I was looking for other places. But never found one. Then about a year later (current time) I went back for his annual shots. I had a stool sample procedure done as well. Its been a month with no call back from vet's office to discuss the stool sample. I went ahead and called today. I was told my phone was diconnected when they tried to call.. HOWEVER this is impossible. And we even double checked the number. Correct number. ANYWAY the sample was too hard to use so the lady was nice enough to tell me to bring in a new same and I wont be charged. EXUSE ME? You are absolutely correct I said .. I paid for this I wont be paying for it again.?? Wonder how many times they tried to call me.. Given I've gotta every other call that has come in the past month... No problem taking money but giving it back and letting the person know. Its a shame because I did like this newer woman vet that is there.
Beyond expectations, wonderful. I recently took my cat in for a urinary obstruction and uti. I was so upset because I had read so many bad things about this problem. I was suggested to LAH through a friend, I called immediately at 8a.m. and they were soo kind and understanding, had me come in asap. As soon as I got there they were gentle and we were seen within 5 minutes. My cat was completely comfortable and the employees had so many wonderful things to say about my cat's stay there. They were understanding about me being on a strict budget and gave me an estimate of everything before they proceeded. The amount was lower than I had expected but I never felt that they treated me or my cat any lesser for it. When I came to pick him up they, again, had nothing but great things to say about him and they had the food and medication all ready to go. Also, LAH sets up an online profile for you with medical history and medications, plus you can add pictures for future use like pets getting lost. I called for a progress report in three days and the vet called me right back to answer some questions, she was very very helpful in more ways than one for me, my cat and my emotions. I even got a call on Saturday for another update from a second vet that attended to him. I would suggest LAH in a heartbeat and I'm going to keep them as a permanent veterinarian from now on.
I have been taking my pets here for years. Never had a bad experience. Always treat my animals with care and as if they were one of their own.
