Dr. Kaufer is a vet that cares deeply about the animals he treats. He sometimes comes across cold like the other reviews have said, but the care your animal will receive in Dr. Kaufer's care will be matched by none. I have brought my dogs to Dr. Kaufer for 20 years and he has always looked after them it the best manner.
My whole family and I have been clients of Dr. Richard Kaufer, Kingston Veterinary Clinic for 30 years. He has seen me and my family through some of the most difficult times over the years and has always been a wonderful doctor, friend and resource for me and my babies. He's scoured articles and other medical literature to provide my babies with the best possible outcome and I don't know what I would do without him. He knows my animals are the most important thing in the world to me and he and his wonderful staff always let me know how much they understand that. There's never been a time I've had an emergency he hasn't seen my animal that day or taken the time to discuss a concern over the phone. I've imposed much on him over the last 30 years and will probably do so for the next 30...but I know my babies couldn't be in better hands. Thank you.
I brought my dog and two cats to Dr. Kaufer for years just because I loved Katie and Theresa in the office. But as far as Dr. Kaufer is concerned you can have him. He is the most rude, arrogant little man you can ever come across on this planet. He gestures at you to follow him into the exam room, doesn’t have the social manners to even say hello, he always seems annoyed at something, and when he’s done with the exam, he just walks out. And you’re left wondering, “Where’d he go?” and then you realize, “Oh, we must be done”. One day my dog woke up and couldn’t walk. We had no idea what occurred. The office got him right in but then Dr. Kaufer belittled us when my husband and I tried to ask him, “Could it have been a spider bite, pesticide, etc?” All of a sudden he blew up and told us that there were a million things it could be but we’ll likely never know and he’s not going to answer our what if’s. My mouth dropped and so did the vet assistant’s (whose name I won’t mention). Our dog was already nervous around Dr. Kaufer and always had to be muzzled, but when I asked him if he could examine my dog on the floor since he was cowering in the corner, he shouted, “Put him on the table now.” My husband did. Then Dr. Kaufer proceeded to give him his annual shots! – in the middle of a nervous breakdown or stroke – because we had the dog there and why not get everything done at once. Later when I put Dr. Kaufer on the spot, he admitted that what ”we” did to the dog wasn’t the best thing to do (give him his shots) because we caused him more stress, as though “I” had something to do with that decision. My friend even asked me what if my dog had later died. I would have paid for all those shots for nothing. So on one of the worst days of my beloved dog’s life, we were yelled at, admonished, and put to shame by the vet who we were paying and putting our trust in to help us. My husband told me that I was to never step in that office again, and I haven’t. I now go to Dr. Kudish and what a world of difference. They love answering your questions and spend as much time as you need with them. Oh, I should finally tell you that the assistant whose mouth dropped open with mine when Dr. Kaufer yelled at us – she called us when we got home and apologized for his behavior. A really nice gesture on her part, but it should have been Dr. Kaufer calling with an apology, not his assistant. You can explain away his behavior with the fact that he’s not a people person and that he’s not a human doctor, but in the end, your loving pets deserve better than this. Think about their feelings before you make that appointment.
I agree with Rebecka. He doesn't mess around when it comes to the health of a pet. I made an appointment with him a little bit ago because my cat was sick. I was able to get in that very same day I called. He seemed like he was scolding me because I didn't bring my cat in sooner. He has very little compassion FOR THE OWNER. But for the actual PET, HE HAS A WORLD OF COMPASSION, and I can see it on him. My little kitty had cold-like symptoms and chronic diarrhea. He had no problem treating him, giving him shots, and giving him medication, and he checked for other problems with my cat. I discussed how things were at home with my cat and he gave me legitimate suggestions to improve them. I brought in a sample of my kitty's diarrhea, and he said he'd run a test for free on it, just in case something was wrong. My cat is now active, playful and happy again. His coat is even softer. Also, prior to this, I was able to schedule an appointment for a Saturday, which he usually doesn't do. He will not chit-chat with you. He is not that type of person. He's not a human doctor, he's a vet.
I so wish I'd read these reviews before taking my dog in today. A pet owner is worried enough without being made to feel as though they've somehow made the vet mad. There was no introduction on the vet's part, just a quick gesture to follow him. I still don't know his name. The first thing he said to me was "Get him up on the scale". I kept thinking something had happened earlier and he was furious, but it seems that that's just the way he is. I agree with Shari's review, a very cold man. Keep in mind that this was my very first visit to this office. There was no paperwork to fill out, no information was gathered from me whatsoever. Futhermore, the bill was over twice as much as quoted over the phone. When I called to discuss the issues I was told by the receptionist that she had "Ten things to do and only a second to talk" . Outrageous. I will never set foot in that office again. Be warned.
