Our experience at Macungie Animal Hospital has almost always been excellent. With three dogs we are quite familiar with all of the vets and the staff and they are all compassionate and professionals. I also appreciate that the vets are open to a variety of treatment options: traditional, holistic, alternative, etc. I have also had several dogs go through their end of life and the staff is always understanding and empathetic.
I brought my dog here for an emergency visit on a Monday morning. The staff and the Vet were nice and friendly. Since it was my first visit, they wanted to do a routine exam and run all of the standard tests; which I was fine with. The Vet (Dr. Kulig) called two days later and left a message that my dog tested positive for Lyme Disease. She said in her message that she was finished for the day, but, would be in the next day from close to finish. Of course, I called first thing the next morning. And, I never received a return phone call. I continued to call and leave messages the next two days and finally received a return phone call from a Vet Tech on Saturday afternoon. She read the Dr's notes and said that they had ordered a prescription for a 30 day supply of 300mg of Compounded Doxycycline. I had many questions and concerns about the medication, as my dog had zero symptoms. I asked her if the test could have been a False-Positive. I also asked her how much the prescription was going to cost and she said $75. Doxycycline is typically an inexpensive antibiotic, but, I was fine with the cost, as I'll spend anything on my pets. I also scheduled an appointment to bring my other dog in to get tested, as well. Brought him in the following Monday and they performed the ELISA Lyme Disease Test right there. Dr. Kulig asked if I had any issues with the medicine. I said, it's been a week and I still haven't received it! He tested positive, as well. Again, with no symptoms. Finally, NINE DAYS later, the medicine came in. I drove back to pick it up and they wanted to charge me $212. I handed over my credit card and then asked why the price went up! Long story short, they claimed that they never gave me a price over the phone. I was pretty upset that I waited NINE DAYS for a prescription and was leaving without it being filled. In the end, I asked for the script, so that I can take it to get filled, myself. They refused to give me the script without signing a waiver! That's illegal. I explained to them, that when I go to the Doctor, my Doctor writes a prescription for medication and I take it to a local pharmacy to get it filled; and this is no different. I was so upset, that I asked them to print out my dogs records of the appointment, as I wouldn't be back. They did. And, on the front page of their medical records, there was a note that the prescription was ordered from Wedgewood Pharmacy and the cost for the medication is $64.75. Nice! I finally left with the script and called Dorneyville Pharmacy (which is a compounding Pharmacy that many local Vets use, including Macungie Animal Hospital) and the script was only $45. Bottom line, when the Vet wants to prescribe medication for your animal, get the script and take it to your local pharmacy. If it's an unusual script, Dorneyville Pharmacy will more than likely have it. Also, I have since learned, that if the ELISA test shows a positive result, a second test called the WESTERN BLOT TEST, should be done to determine the level of the disease. That test gets sent to an FDA lab. The In-House tests done on site do not require evaluation or approval by the FDA. Chances are, your pet doesn't even need the medication…mine didn't!
AMAZING!!! I used to take my dogs to a Vet location (VCA) and after they put my dog through an unnecessary surgery with out giving us any other options I decided to switch. (Our dog had a sebaceous cyst and we spent $1,000 and then was told by another vet we should have done a warm compress first to see if that would have made it subside by itself. I then asked the Vet at VCA about this and they back peddled and then told me that it could have worked, but that the surgery took care of it right away. It left me wondering, was the surgery better for the dog, or better for the vet since a warm compress twice a day is free. Our dog has since had two more and warm compresses have taken them away every time. That is a savings of $2,000 and my dog not having two more surgeries and having to wear a cone for 1 - 2 weeks each time.) Since I have switched to this vet, my dogs are not nearly as nervous, their prices are better, and the Vets who come in do nothing but love you dog, do only what is necessary and in the best interest of the dog. They also have gone over all options with me every time I have gone there. I've had dogs all of my life and have gone to many, many different veterinarians, but this place easily tops them all. The staff are all friendly and like I said before, they do not push you on anything and then make you feel guilty when you ask questions.
We are not regular patients of this clinic but our dog had an emergency ear laceration that was bleeding like crazy. This was thanks to our other dog playing with her. Our vet is farther away but Dr. Soures took us in very quickly and was able to glue her ear together and tape it so that it would not continue opening up. It looks great now and she did not seem to mind the procedure despite how painful it must have been. I am very appreciative!
I have had dogs my entire life and this is, without a doubt, the best veterinary clinic I have ever come across. The staff are kind and helpful, the techs are knowledgeable and compassionate, and the vets treat my two dogs as if they were their own. Their prices are comparable to other practices in the region and they also do price matching. You can always get an appointment quickly and they don't double book, so the waiting room time is never long. The building itself is lovely and well-maintained. I highly recommend this place.
