I loved this vet clinic. I just moved to Philly and took a gamble on where to find a vet. I made an appointment here and absolutely loved it. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind, and the vet told me things about one of my cats that my previous vet had never mentioned that could impact its health. They were even running a special "first exam free with coupon" special when I booked my appointment, but even though I forgot the coupon, they still gave it to me for free. Wonderful experience.
The doctors there were caring and the facility is nice. With that said, the prices are insane. I was charged $63 for the visit as well as $30 for a medicine that cost me $8 at another vet. Additionally, my cat was incorrectly diagnosed and given medicine that had nothing to do with her problem. It took 5 minutes for another vet to determine what was wrong with my cat vs. the hour I spent at VCA and they still came up with the wrong answer.
I just returned from my visit to VCA, where I brought my cat for a stomach problem*. After dealing with several other vets in the city, I can say with confidence that the staff at VCA far surpasses any I'd previously encountered. I was set up with a same-day appointment, 40 minutes from the time I called. They spent more time and attention on my cat than I receive at my own (non-vet) physicians office. They didn't scare or stress out my cat in any way; even after taking his temperature he didn't seem to mind them. All-in-all AMAAAZING staff! We're home now, snuggling on the couch. He is not angry or annoyed with me for taking him to the vet! For once, I don't have to worry about him plotting revenge against me :-) *He was throwing up all day yesterday, the night before, and then still this morning. He is only 2; this was the first time he'd ever thrown up and the frequency of it had me very, very worried.
Ugh. We took our cat in to get checked out; he had a problem with his ear. The staff was nice, and I can't knock the service based on our experience today. In the end, ringworm was the theory- they took a hair sample to grow a culture (two weeks to find out the result of this test)-- in the end, they sold us anti-fungal cream for $40 and initially were going to charge us $400 for the visit. We talked them down to $200. $240 for a visit with meds. No thanks. The Animal and Bird Hospital in Cherry Hill stands as my absolute favorite vet in the Philly area, and although a bit pricier (and further away) than other places, they have a lab on-site and charge FAR less than VCA. I'll pass on VCA from now on, thanks.
I am giving this facility 2 stars for the kindness they showed when euthanizing my sister's cat. The reason I'm only giving 2 stars is that the estimate for over $2000.00 of tests/care was completely outrageous since a simple chem panel showed us that he was in stage 5 kidney failure. I didn't know there was a stage 5 anything. Why on earth would you suggest multiple chem tests, urinalysis, X-rays, feLV and FIV tests, 2 different antibiotics, anti-nausea med, potassium chloride, and vitamin B complex (yes, really), and more to a 15 year old cat dying of kidney failure?? The expense was uncalled for but the real crime would have been if they had put the cat through it all. I had to suggest pain medicine (as that somehow wasn't indicated?) and subcutaneous fluid while my sister came to terms with letting him go. I called my vet to go over the recommendations and it was she who told us that the chem panel could tell us a lot and help us make any decisions about how to proceed. The dr at VCA was as sweet as could be so I'm not sure whether the issue was a lack of experience or a lack of control. If it was a lack of compassion then she deserves an Academy Award. I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours at UPENN caring for my special needs cat and have always been grateful for their care. If your pet is in trouble please, please be careful and do your research.
