The staff here has saved my dog's life TWICE. Period. I'll be forever grateful to BAERC for how well they handled both of those terrifying situations. I had no idea what to do. After two experiences there, I know for a fact that these people love animals, and that's why they work there. I have a 13 year old Labrador Retriever. The first time I brought Molly in, she seemed to have stomach distension and she was in a lot of distress. But, they found out it was actually a problem with her reproductive system that required an immediate surgery. They spelled out all the options clearly and there was no insistence about the money, or how/when I would pay. They referred us back to our regular veterinary hospital for the surgery. The surgery COULD have been done there, but they honored my wishes that I wanted her usual vet to perform it. This is proof positive to me that they're not just about money. The second time was more serious. Molly's throat had almost fully collapsed and she was struggling for air. She was dying right in front of me from respiratory distress. I panicked and called BAERC. The woman on the phone handled my emotions very well, and she let me know that based on what I was describing, I needed to bring her in immediately. We got her in not a moment too soon... thank God we live just a few blocks away. My poor dog was so oxygen deprived, her tongue was dark blue. They rushed her inside on a stretcher and immediately attended to her. She was on the way out and they SAVED her life. I'm writing this with tears in my eyes because, without BAERC, my dog wouldn't be here right now. If anybody reading this is in the middle of an emergency, my advice is don't hesitate to call when seconds count. If you have any doubts about whether your pet really needs emergency treatment, play it on the safe side and get them checked! I was doubtful and I almost didn't take her in. She would have died if I didn't. They know what they're doing and they will get your pet the help he/she needs.

This facility was very disappointing. Very eager to make a buck, and not very sensitive to the family or their feelings. Our dog was hit by a truck so we reluctantly took him to BAEC. We didn't really want to because of the reviews, but we really had no choice. The first thing she said(the vet) was "who's the owner?" My girlfriend said "we all are" (we had a couple of the kids with us). She said "well who's paying?, that's who I want to speak to." Financially we weren't able to afford all of the things that the vet recommended, and when we couldn't afford her options, she quickly suggested he be put down. "He is critically injured, and he needs to be treated right away", he may have this, and that, and the longer you wait, the longer he suffers" We were all upset, and didn't really know what to do, but we love our dog. I felt we were being rushed to make a very important decision (Max is family). Then when we asked for some more time to decide, we were being inhumane for not paying for the meds she offered, but she needed the money up front, and we just didn't have it. She suggested we take the dog home with meds, and turn him over to a shelter in the morning....Thank God we didn't just decide to put the dog down. Out of all the possible worst things she told us may be wrong, Max only needed stitches, and he is home resting comfortably...Thanks to a wonderful doctor who really loves animals, and not just his paycheck.....misdiagnosed again..smh the vet seemed very high strung, and money was her main focus...what was really strange was that the whole time she kept saying "the longer you take to decide, the more he suffers, you should get meds ($30 for shots $55 for a bandage), and we can go from there" then when we decide to get pain meds and take him home to get a second opinion, it took her like forever to come back and speak with us. Then as we were getting him in the car she called us inhumane, and was really rude. I wouldn't recommend you go here for a pet that you love, unless they have already passed on, because it seems like that is when they care the most, from the reviews I have read.

I'm not just writing this based on the fact that we had to put our cat down. The staff are inconsiderate and only care about money. All they would do is hive us figures and they seemed bored or annoyed as we are trying to decide the fate of a much loved animal. The staff is very poor at interacting with emotions. Its was just money, money, money.

I have just come home from having my little companion for the past 16 1/2 years put to sleep at the Berks Animal Emergency Center and I have to say that I have never been treated as kindly by any doctor's office, human or animal, in my entire life. I am hurting so much inside but warmed by the treatment that Barney received in the last minutes of his life.
