Awful place. I would recommend taking your pet anywhere besides the Portsmouth Veterinary Clinic. We adopted a dog three years ago and began taking him to Portsmouth Veterinary Clinic. The puppy had a few health issues one being a stomach condition. They had us put the dog on a chicken and rice diet for weeks while they ran other tests, but could not figure out what was wrong with him. Come to find out he was allergic to chicken, the only food they told us to give him. They never even mentioned it could be a food allergy and it wasn't until a friend told us to try beef instead of chicken that it was resolved. They just continued to run tests without any results. After this our dog needed a round of antibiotics and steroids. They put the wrong drug in the wrong bottle so we were giving our dog the wrong doses of medications for two days before we figured out their mistake. The vet was very apologetic but too little too late. Two major mistakes that made our dog worse instead of better is enough for us, we're moving on to a new vet. Finally, the receptionist is unfriendly, rude and has an awful attitude. I highly recommend you take your pet elsewhere.

I've been a client at the Portsmouth Veterinary clinic since 1983. All of my dogs and one cat have always received wonderful, caring treatment throughout the years. Today, both of my dogs, 11 and 12 years old, are given the loving care senior dogs require, and having their teeth cleaned is part of that. The state of the art equipment and the close monitoring of them while under anesthesia gives me the reassurance that I need. Plus my dogs adore everyone in the clinic, the doctors and technicians both. I can't ask for any better care. I've had nothing but good experiences in all my years as a client.

My husband and I took our dog to this clinic yesterday to get an estimate on how much it would cost to remove two bad teethes. The doctor checked her heart, mouth, and told us that our dog was a very healthy dog considering her age. Our priority was to remove her two teethes, and depending on the estimate, we also wanted to have her teethes cleaned up. The doctor stated that our dog had a heart murmur, but that it could be an "innocent heart murmur." So, she recommended us to get a blood test to make sure our dog could handle the anesthesia. We of course, agreed and paid $195 dollars for the visit and the blood test. We asked the doctor to give us an idea of how much it would cost; she referred us to her assistant. The assistant came back with two pages of "possible charges," which ranged between $500 to $1,600 bill. What the hell is that? I believe if we are paying for a visit, we should get an accurate estimate right away! The first page was the cleaning procedure (that was $500 including the anesthesia); the second page was the actual removal of her teeth (which was up to $1600). Surprisingly, the second page had "options" that the doctor may require during the procedure. I don't know what that meant, so we asked the assistant to explain. She said that some dogs would have had up to 20 teethes removed and that the doctor would decide whether my dog need the two teethes or more removed. According to our budget, we decided to remove just the two bad ones and wait for the clean up when we get to Florida. They said NO, they have "their own way," and the doctor will determine what is necessary for the dog. What does it mean? Are we leaving in a dictatorial country or are we leading there? Of course we want our dog to be healthy - she has been part of our family since my daughter was born! But, we can't afford to pay a $1,600 dollar bill! I admit they were very kind (but that is a nice way to play you fool!) How many people fall in this trap? I believe many innocent people! I hope this help you to be aware of their intentions. They do not care about you nor the animals. Sorry! Horrible experience.

After dealing with another vet on the Island, coming here was night and day. Dr. Mike Kenfield and his team were fantastic. Now I know that there is a place, that will treat my dog as a person and not just an animal. Semper Fidelis Kevin USMC 85-91
