Wouldn't recommend them. Actually, we had been contemplating moving our dog to a different vet for a while - $1200 spay, $400 visits, $300 ultrasound (don't forget the sitting fee since they can't tell you when the traveling ultrasound will be in town) and on an on. Dave Serra is not a compassionate, caring vet. He is a doctor who gets paid to care for your animal. And if they need to make more money, they can just order more tests, even after they're >> 90% they know what's wrong. Bottom line: If your dog or cat or whatever needs a check up, they're perfectly fine. But if you need routine testings - blood tests, imaging, urinalysis - you're going to get hammered. And don't question them about it, don't you dare! Don't "quibble" over small charges like full day crate fees (yes, they use the word quibble). Funny how people don't have any trouble telling you how to spend your money. Good vets? Maybe. Motivated by financial considerations? No doubt. And be prepared to be spoken to like you're a 5 year old, even if you're a University Professor of Biomedical Engineering. (By the way, why was EVERY other review written at the same time?)

We had Dr. Serra be Albi's "main" vet, and even though we clashed in our methods and ways at first, I got to learn that he really is just trying to do his job (and let's be real, I am not a DVM). I took my GSD here where had gotten diagnosed with perianal fistulae, which ended up with a pretty grim prognosis as to what would happen to him. Dr. Serra changed his diet and gave him the first line defense medications for PFs (metronidazole, prednisone). Albi had 2 more visits afterwards that proved that we would need some heavy stuff to get him better, but on our last visit Dr. Serra had a really amazing moment where he had found a study that proved Protopic (study I had found before as well but decided not to step on his toes) would be helpful, and he also had a pamphlet on the medication on his desk that was mailed to him by chance. So he put him on it, and it made me incredibly happy that he noticed when something new needed to be tried. Albi eventually got better thanks to work from a conventional vet who also worked with traditional chinese herbal medicine (Dr. Stephanie Torlone), as well as a holistic vet (Dr. Sharon Doolittle). But Dr. Serra helped us with what he knew, and he really became helpful with figuring out how to treat Albi with the cheapest drugs possible (if it was possible!). I should point out - Dr. Serra was the only vet in RI a few years back to successfully treat and cure a patient with leptospirosis, and he is known in the region for being an excellent vet. I was pointed in his direction by a vet student, and if I was for all conventional medicine, I'd still be with him (he didn't seem to keen on holistic medicine when I asked him). But my dog proved to me that sometimes a blend of mother nature and conventional is what will get a patient back to good health. Also in the office is Dr. White - a few years back, Albi got really bad diarrhea from eating a hot dog at an outdoor party, and he was very good. He helped explain what was going on with him, what the meds were and why, and then he took the time to show us how to taper the rice and chicken mix we had to put him on. So overall, you had a good chance with whomever you get here.

I have been with Wood River Animal Hospital since its opening so many years ago. They have treated all of my cats and dogs since then. The most important thing for me is that my pets and I are treated as special. They have taken outstanding care of my pets and have made extraordinary accommodations for me in helping my "children" get the care they need.
