There aren't a lot of choices for avian vets here, but even if there was a massive selection, Dr. Katie and Dr. Jose are well worth visiting. The office is first rate and professional. The advice they give is spot on, and you should not be dissuaded by poor reviews. I have taken 3 of my 4 birds there always to receive curteous and caring service. Being an experienced bird owner, I can tell you that diet is very, very important and that wing clipping for birds who are not in an aviary is a must. The review here about the vet trying to push pellets unnecessarily onto the owner is ridiculous. Anybody who has done any amount of research regarding avian diets will know that food plays a fundamental role in the health of your bird. Giving a plucking bird a better diet can result in less plucking and returning plummage ... a longer happier life. It can reduce screaming and bad behavior sometimes, too! There is a load of research on diet and nutrition, so before you judge whether or not recommending a healthy diet for a bird is a scam, do a quick internet search. The same goes for wing clipping. If your bird is in your house and able to fly around it IS NOT SAFE for the bird. Birds should never have been domesticated to begin with so before you get on a soapbox and preach about the moral dillemma of wing clipping, do your research about the perrils of allowing a free-flighted bird to have its way around your home. Better yet, buy a few books and learn for yourself how to be a good birdie parent. The basic rules of owning a parrot are the same as that for a child ... a good diet and good emotional health (for birds ... toys, love and proper cage setup). Don't be ignorant and skip a good vet simply because somebody didn't want to hear that they could be doing better, or because somebody didn't want to spend the amount of money necessary to keep the bird healthy. You should not be buying your bird food at PetSmart, Walmart or Kroger, folks! You should be feeding your bird quality food that isn't sold by the bushel. Treat your birds as you would your kids ... or even better! We love you here in Columbia, Dr. Katie and Dr. Jose! xoxo
