My foster dog Punkin was taken in to this facility after only being off the streets for three weeks. Keep in mind she a 6 month old Boxer mix most likely dumped and treated very poorly at the hands of a human. She is not aggressive but is fearful. The type of fear that makes her want to run away and hide..not bite. She lives at my home currently with my three rescued pit bulls and I can honestly say she does not have one ounce of maliciousness in her. She wouldn't even hurt a fly. Dr H apparently thought differently and suggested she be taken to animal control after he couldn't get a muzzle on her. He even laid on top of her, increasing her fright and will to escape. As a person involved in rescue for quit some time....this is NOT acceptable nor is it good practice. DO NOT TAKE A RESCUE DOG HERE. This man DOES care for animals and was doing what he thought was correct procedure when Punkin became scared. He was polite and listened to my concerns about what happened during the exam but he has a very old school way of thinking. This is where the problem lies. I do not want to harm this vet by negatively posting about his way of practice, but I do want the rescue community to be aware that there are vets out there with this mentality and please be mindful of who you take these babies to. It seems this vet has a very skewed perception of the rescue process and fosters. He believes that after four months, dogs have fully developed their personalities and what ever issue they show it’s how they will be for the rest of their life. He thinks that it’s highly unlikely that a rescue dog with any fear, aggression, or dominant trait will be able to live a healthy, balanced life without being a threat to society. For all of us involved in rescue, we know first hand this is not true. And we also know there are plenty of people out there who still think rescue dogs or certain breeds of dogs like Pit Bulls are dangerous dogs that should be put down or thrown into a shelter. This is where we need more and more people to step up, educate, and create as much awareness as possible. The specific incidents that happened with Punkin would have probably never taken place if this vet understood, supported and had current education on the ever growing community of animal rescue and the positive results of what these “unadoptable dogs” can show. Today’s phone conversation changed my viewpoint on this entire Punkin incident. I’m not writing this as to bash this man’s practice and to get revenge for Punkin. I’m writing to bring awareness to a giant problem that we as rescuers face everyday - changing the mindset of how society views and treats animals. Instead of deeming a dog unadoptable or dangerous because its fearful, sick, abused, or even Pit Bull, lets take the opposite approach. Let’s not take the easy route and put them down. Let’s be responsible, train them, lead them and give them love. We need to fight for them, be their voice, and give them the chance at something they all deserve….LIFE.
My family has taken our pets to see Dr Hernandez for as long as I can remember. We originally went because the office was located near our neighborhood, but 25+ years later it's for the care our pets have received. Dr Hernandez treated my childhood dogs, he now treats my Dad's dog, my Mom's and my brother's as well as mine. My dog never took to people well at first but he loved Dr Hernandez from the start. He is very caring, patient with people as well as the animals, and makes sure to fully explain everything that he's doing. My dog had to get blood drawn for the first time this year and he wasn't very happy. Dr Hernandez took the time to calm him down after, petting him and just generally loving on him. I will never take any of my pets anywhere else. He treats them as if they were his own. And not to mention the prices are super reasonable. I will pay whatever I need to for my dog, but it's good to know that there is a vet's office that has a truly world-class, top quality doctor as well as affordable prices.
I have gone to Dr. Hernandez for over 25 years. Even though I have relocated further away from his practice out to the Rowlett area, I continue to go the distance to see him because he has taken wonderful care of my cats and dogs through the years. My daughter even travelled from Fort Worth to have her two kittens declawed there because he had the most reasonable prices in the metroplex. He will always take the time to explain treatment options and always is very kind and thoughtful and has a great sense of humor. I always walked out of his office feeling better than when I walked in.
I'm just adding another review to the positive reviews that are here. Dr. Hernandez is great with people and great with animals. I'm referring all of the animal lovers I know to this place.
Dr. Hernandez is one of the best vets I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He truly cares about the animals he treats, as well as their owners. And his prices are extremely reasonable. I highly recommend his clinic to any and all pet owners.
