TL;DR: Had a bad feeling about the place, left puppy anyway, Desk Lady called 3 hours later to say the puppy was vomiting everywhere, even though she was fine when I left her. I took a foster puppy here, with the intent of getting her spayed before sending her to her new owner. She is 11 weeks old, and my regular vet won't spay until 6 months of age, so the rescue group I'm working with told me to take her to Abbott. BAD SIGN #1: When I called to make the appointment, I told Desk Lady I needed a pediatric spay, and she replied "you need a WHAT?" BAD SIGN #2: For pre-surgery, I was told to stop feeding the puppy at 9pm the night prior, and give her no food or water in the morning. Everything I've read about pediatric spay procedures says you should give them a little food in the morning, because they are prone to hypoglycemia. I called back to confirm, told Desk Lady that the puppy is only 11 weeks old, AGAIN, and she said no food or water was to be given the morning of the surgery. I read many, many bad reviews of the clinic, but trusted that the rescue group wouldn't send people there if it was terrible. However, when I took her the next morning, I got a really bad "please don't kill this dog" vibe from the place. Desk Lady gave me attitude about not bringing her shot records, even though no mention was made of it either time I called to make and confirm the appointment. I gave her the phone number to my vet's office, and she let me leave, only to call me 20 minutes later while I was driving back into town, to say the puppy needed another set of shots and a deworming. Not being a vet, I deferred to their judgment and said to go ahead. Three hours after I left the puppy, Desk Lady left a voicemail saying "this puppy is reeeeeal sick, you need to come get her." She was ABSOLUTELY FINE when I left her. When I called to see what was going on, Desk Lady went on about how she had never seen a puppy vomit so much, and there was some red-brown substance in it, and she basically scared the crap out of me for the puppy's welfare. I called my vet, warned them I'd be bringing in a sick puppy, and then drove like the wind to go get her from Abbott. When I arrived, Desk Lady wasn't there, and a tech just sort of handed her to me. I told the tech I needed a list of all the medications they gave her, and whether she had been anesthetized, and the tech said they hadn't given her anything. This raised an eyebrow for me, since I had been told she was the first in queue. What had they been doing with her for the last 3 hours?! I can only assume I was wearing an "I will sue you into oblivion" expression, because no mention of payment was made, no paperwork exchanged. The puppy seemed scared, and smelled of vomit. I rushed her to my regular vet, who examined her, and said he saw no sign of illness. When I took her home, she ate every bit of food I put in front of her. Later, when I was looking for another vet who would perform a pediatric spay, I learned that Abbott's performing a spay surgery on a dog who had not yet been vaccinated for rabies is AGAINST STATE LAW. They never said a thing about a rabies shot.
Abbot has had a horrible reputation for many years. We took our cat there once, almost 20 years ago and got the same rude uncompassionate treatment others have described. My daughter worked there years later as part of her Ag work-study. She quit within a month due to the horrible working conditions and the treatment of the animals under the vet's care. She could not, in good conscience, participate in such poor care. If you love your animals, do NOT take them to Abbot Animal Clinic. You have been warned.
When my daughter worked for a short time at this vet, there was a female dog kept in a cage in the back room 24/7/365 used for breeding purposes only. My memory isn't the most reliable, but I believe it was a Yorkshire Terrier. Definitely a small breed. The poor dog was constantly pregnant or nursing babies, and always left at the clinic and never taken home to anyone's house. The clinic is nice and modern, but has the overpowering odor of urine. The veterinarian is very cold and seems uncaring, and I never saw him smile once. On a positive note, I have twice found strays and taken them there only to see if they were microchipped, and the receptionist is very helpful and nice.
I called for an appt for a sick baby cockateil. The initial contact was good. A woman answered the phone, she was polite and helpful. She explained to me that the Dr was usually out of the office between 1 and 430 but i live so far away that i wouldnt have been able to make it before 1. I was about to tell her that I would rather the 430 then an Arabic (I'm guessing because of his accent) got on the phone when the woman and I started discussing appt availability... "What time do you want to come in?" Well, I can get there by 1 but... "You come at 1 you will wait. You make an appt and you have to come on time" I am trying to make an appt but you asked what time I 'wanted' to come in. I can come in at 430 if that will work. "You be here at 430 you won't wait. You make appt, you keep appt and be here on time." First of all.... No one should speak to their clients or perspective clients that way! I don't expect to be treated like that over the phone, especially since I would have been a new client with a new patient! That's the kind of phone treatment you give? God only knows what kind of treatment a person and their pet will get when they get there.... No Thank you! I'll never even consider that place again. Never.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!! NEVER take an animal here! Not your animal or even a stray! I adopted a little dog and had to take it here to get fixed. After reading the poor reviews, I expressed my concern to the adoption place and they assured me it was a wonderful place to take animals. WRONG! I dropped my little baby off this morning to be fixed-even though I had a bad feeling-and the office just called and said the "vet" wanted to talk to me. He got on the phone and said there had been an "accident." He said when he put my baby under, he just quit breathing and they could not bring him back. I asked if he had done blood work prior to putting my baby under and he said "No, you declined it." I "declined" the extra blood work the gal up front offered but thought surely they would do some sort of blood work prior to sedation to make sure my baby could tolerate it. This is irresponsible and totally unacceptable! I will NEVER take another animal of any sort to this clinic EVER again and will NEVER tell anyone to take their pet there! In fact, I will do everything I can to make sure I get the word out about this horrible place!!! A VERY Sad and Grieving Pet Owner
