I love the county pound. They have a great selection of dogs. I picked up my pet, he was so happy to come home with me. The facility is a county pound, they are under-staffed and overworked. The animals are doing well from what I can tell. Not sure what people expect to see when they walk in to this place, but do not expect chandeliers, the place to smell good, nor the animals to be fed Science Diet or Iams. They rely on volunteers to help out the staff when they can. There is a stay requirement before the dog can leave. I had to wait a week for my dog just in case the owner came forward. For a cheap amount the dog is spayed or neutered, receive their shots, and get a rabbies shot. They are also registered with the city as required by state law. I am looking for another dog for my current one, so they will have each other. And my dog is trained already! The previous owner took good care of him, just whatever the circumstance had to turn him in to the pound.
I had a very wonderful experience at the HPCHES. My dog (Aidan) was stolen last year and I originally went to the shelters to see if he was there. I checked every shelter in Houston. No dice. After a period of mourning, I decided I needed another companion. I knew I didn't want to go to a breeder and spend an exorbitant amount of money when there were wonderful and precious dogs at shelters who deserved a good home. I mustered up courage to head back to all the shelters in January. I just couldn't find a pup that I could make eye contact with and bond with immediately. After a full day looking at dogs from different shelters, HPCHES was my last stop. I wasn't hopeful as there were lots of people there to pick up dogs. I finally got my turn to go to the back and look at all of them. I understand that this is a haven for dogs to keep them off the street however it does look and smell like a jail. The facility is clean, however, but the smell of bleach and urine inundates the air. It's a little dark when you first get in the lobby. It's not appealing but I know it's not the HPCHES fault. This made me want to find a dog from here even more. I searched once and then went around again; I looked at puppies, small dogs, and then large dogs. That's when I saw him (Beaumont). He was too perfect. We locked eyes and I knew he was the one! The staff informed me how the process worked and I had to wait for him to be neutered. Once that was done, I was able to pick him up. As they say, the rest is history! The staff was very nice, knowledgeable, and handled the dogs well. I appreciated the time they spent with me to ensure Beaumont and I were comfortable. The fees were dirt cheap! I can't believe it's that cheap to adopt a dog at a shelter. You get a lot for the price. Everyone, if you are in the market for a dog, try a shelter instead of going to breeders or pet stores. Their goal is to make money understandably, but you can get a wonderful lifelong pet for little to nothing who would appreciate all the love you can give at a shelter. There are too many dogs and cats who are bred and thrown out on the streets, only for the shelter to come and pick them up.
Called 5 days ago about a couple strays. 1 was a pit that looked like it was hit by a car and in some ruff shape. The other was a terrier type that wouldn't leave her side. Both not fixed and both friendly and sure that they are previously pets n not wild. But are covered in parasites fleas ticks and probably some space worms also. After I called the first time I gave them some water and layed down and after I got up a few hours later I went to check to see if they picked them up. We'll the 1 came out but the other one moved to some bushes. Went back into my truck and checked on them again and the hurt pit bull was gone and I figured they picked her up since she was hurt or she crawled off deeper into the bushes to die. I feed and watered the other guy and figured another truck driver might pick him up or he'll move on now that she's gone. Couple days later he was still there and so I bought out some water for him and he barked at the bushes and she came out just wagging her tail and limping with her front left paw just hanging. Happy as could be and she drank about a gallon of water. Got them some food and looked at her and she's either pregnant or just had puppies. As soon as she's done eating and drinking she's back in the bushes. He likes staying under the trucks. Same thing every day since Friday afternoon. I come out he runs over to the bushes barks at her she comes out limping and wagging her tail I give them some food and water they eat drink she goes to the bushes and he goes under a truck. I called again Monday morning and they have no record of me calling. So this is the flying j truckstop and a lot of drivers have dogs. I have a old dog and she is starting to get limps on her skin and warts on her legs which should tell you how good her am une system is. So I don't want my dog around them or in the same area where they walk or go potty because my dog can easily get something then she's spreading space worms around the nation's truckstops and rest areas. I'm not here forever since I'm a truck driver. So either these people collect my sales taxes and gives me and other truck drivers public service that we pay for. Or these dogs remain strays and potential spread diseases around north houston. I understand that shelters don't have big budgets and have to put dogs down but is it better for these pets to suffer from dehydration, parasites, diseases ,hunger and lack of medical attention or to be humanly put down. Why let these dogs suffer especially the pit bull who was hit by a car. Come pick them up. Why let them suffer and why let them spread diseases.
I adopt a puppy back in September, and this people is really helpful and hardworking, I'm very satisfied with the service. my puppy is healthy and playful and ready for his 2 round of shots in November.
DO NOT BRING ANIMALS TO THIS HORRID PLACE UNLESS YOU WANT THEM EUTHANIZED (there is no waiting period) some places offer 30 to 90 days before put down!
