This review is about my experiences at Banfield with Dr. Miles Looman-Nelson. Until we found Dr. Looman-Nelson, we felt as though we didn't have a Veterinary doctor we felt completely comfortable with handling our cats. The arrival of Dr. Nelson provided a MUCH NEEDED niche for the Upper Valley (McAllen, Pharr, Edinburg, Mission) area for veterinary cat care. It's very obvious he is very knowledgeable about cats/felines and shares that special connection with them that many cat owners do with their kittys. As well he should, he mentioned having many cats as pets at home. We have 2 cats. 1 large lazy one and 1 huge scardy cat (literally). Dr. Looman-Nelson has seen both. While the vet assistants can be hit-or-miss, Dr. Looman-Nelson is a sure bet! Our fat-cat was the first to be seen by Dr. Nelson. She had been having issues so we took her in. She loves people and would sit in the lap of the devil himself given the chance. We noticed that Dr. Nelson had a very gentle yet confident way of handling her. From his body language to his conversation with us (and the patient), that Dr. Nelson is a "Cat Guy". Not only did he diagnose and treat her underlying issue (kidneys), he took the time to answer ALL questions we had and even chat a bit about his own cats. Unlike many prior visits with other DVM's, we did not feel rushed or that cats were really "not their thing". A few months later, the real test came when our big cat, who is afraid of his own shadow, started exhibiting teeth issues. The cat is EXTREMELY skittish hadn't been to a vet since he had been neutered about 8 years prior. He's the type that scurries off and hides whenever anyone comes over to the house. The vet assistants were very nice and encouraging as far as being able to handle him. After extracting a loose tooth (on the spot!), Dr. Nelson explained, in detail, his issues, how he planned to treat them and most importantly why. For example, Dr. Nelson explained about how he chose a certain anti-biotic to use, how it worked and why he chose to use that one specifically for our case. If you have a cat that needs care, ask for him by name. We schedule our cat's appointments specifically around his work schedule now.
My only complain is "do not display something that you do not offer". I called today because most vets are closed by 5. Our cat has a wound on it that it got and now I have to pay the extra money for a night clinic. Nonetheless, I thought I could bring my pet here once I read the "Walk ins Welcome", "Hours of Operation: 7 days a week daily everyday" "Hours: 9 am- 7 pm". So I called and asked (it was 6:15 pm) if they'd be able to take my cat in if I got there within the next five minutes . I expected a yes. Instead I got a "let me check", was put on hold for a few minutes, and was obviously forgotten because I got a "Hello, this is ____, how can I help you?" the next time they answered. I asked again. They responded with an "I'm sorry, we only take by appointment after 5." Your service may be great. Actually, I've head its great, not by the pseudo reviews below me but from other people. But I'd appreciate it if you guys would at least be honest in what your services are. DO NOT POST WHAT WILL MAKE YOU LOOK BETTER. Please.
This vet is horrible. I dont have the plan there but I called because the vet I usually go to was out of town. At the time I thought that my dog might be 1 month pregnant but I wanted a vet to tell me for sure so I called and they said the vet could examine her and determine if she was pregnant or not for $40. That didnt seem too bad so I made an appointment for that same day and took her in. The vet completed the examine and then told me that my dog wasnt pregnant and that she was probably experiencing a pseudo pregnancy that some dogs go through. He spent 30 mins explaining all this stuff about a pseudo pregnancy so I paid and left feeling confident that my dog wasnt pregnant based on what he told me. 4 weeks later my dog has 5 puppies in the middle of the night!!! I was so upset that the vet was not experienced enough to determine my dog was pregnant. I am never taking my dog there again...waste of my money!!!
We had our dog signed up for the plans. We paid a lot of money for this, and they said that they have emergency services. One day we had an actual emergency in the middle of the night and nobody answered...we had to take our dog somewhere else. The next morning the guy call and says he didnt hear the phone! like WTF? Very expensive and the doctor is always trying to sell you the most expensive shampoo and conditioner! $15 a bottle...he makes you feel like a bad person if u dont buy it...what a douche. I also agree with the other comment..they always leave early...than what is advertise! DONT GO!!! its a waist of money!!!!
Ok, Ive had bad experiences here with ONE of the vets. Dr. Garcia I would never recommend, I wont allow him to care for my pets ever again. BUT, Dr. Early is great. I continue going here for him only. He saved my dog, and went extra miles for his well being. When I make appointments, I make sure he will be the one caring for my pets. Ive made it clear on several occasions to staff members. Dr. Early I highly recommend.
