Dr. Heather Akridge, one of the dermatologist vets, saved my dog's life through her treatment. My dog had a rare disease called canine leprosy. We thought we might have to amputate his ear and/or leg when the disease started spreading. We thought we might even lose him. However Dr. Akridge got the disease under control and slowly cured him over a period of eight months. She even consulted with doctors from around the world to come up with solutions. She also followed up with us every few weeks to make sure that our dog was doing okay and that the medicines were working properly. In short, she saved our dog's life and I highly recommend her and this hospital.
We are post-op with our dog who needed knee surgery. We went to the one in Round Rock. The main waiting room is huge - so little worry about scuffles between strangers. The people behind the desk were professional and very friendly. Our doctor Dr Kerpsack was straightforward, explained everything we needed to know and obviously shows affection and compassion for his 4 legged patients. The costs were clear stated and explained upfront. My non-emergency after-surgery call was returned within 1 hour. If we do find ourselves needing any doggie surgery, we will be coming here.
In our experience, Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital has excellent surgeons and a fine facility. However, we should have been more skeptical about having the facility perform an expensive back surgery on our ageing Great Dane. Eight weeks after the surgery our dog can no longer walk on his own, and his fecal incontinence is markedly worse. I feel terrible that we subjected our pet to this procedure. Bottom line: I'd trust any one of the surgeons at CTVSH to treat an issue with an otherwise healthy pet. But I'll definitely think twice about allowing any surgery to fight an issue that could be caused by old age.
It gets three stars, not due to the veterinary care, but to the staff. The vets there are great and knowledgeable. But, the staff appears to be happy to do as little as possible. They never told us that our dog's much needed medicine required ordering. I go down there to pick up her meds and they don't have it. It needs to be ordered they said. You need to send the prescription to a regular pharmacist they said. OK, fair enough. They ask me if I would like to have it faxed and where I want it to go and I tell them the Target in Pflugerville. Which one they ask. There's only one I say. Do you have the number they ask. No I say. Well, we don't have the number they say. We can write the script for you so you can drive again some where else and wait some more for some medicine we aren't sure is even going to be there they imply. So after driving far to the vet for no reason and driving far back to my pharmacy, they don't have the medicine. It has to be ordered. So, Target does what the Vet should have done. Called a pharmacy until you find one that has the much needed medicine for my dog so that she doesn't have to suffer any longer. When one spends $100s or $1000s on vet care, the least they could do was ensure my dog has her medicine after seeing her four days before hand. The least they could do was to open up Google and look up the number and faxed it over. The best they could have done was to call after results came in, ordered the medicine and give us a time and day as to when we could have picked it up. Our dog doesn't have much time here with us and needs this medicine to ease her suffering. This was important.
