Keep in mind there are good locations and what seems bad locations. I live in Utah and the Banfield I go to is fast and knowledgeable and always very friendly. The vets know what they are talking about and I have never had a negative issue in the years I have gone there.
I would never take my pet under any circumstances to a Banfield vet or any vet associated with Petsmart. I did not have a good experience at the Taylorsville location. The vet was insensitive and he didn't seem to be very knowledgable about diseases in dogs. He seemed very careful with what he said to me about what was going on with my Dog, it felt like he was withholding information about my dog's prognosis just so I would spend more money on testing. He was completely unwilling to give me any ball park prognosis or diagnosis based on physical symptoms, but more than happy to bid me a long list of very expensive testing procedures. It wasn't that I was unwilling to spend the money––I just felt like I couldn't trust Banfield and that their main objective was to get me to spend as much as possible rather than being genuinely focused on treating my dog. My dog was on Seizure medication and needed her meds asap. The receptionist never called me back to let me know that the prescription had been filled. My vet only worked a day a week (that should have been a clue to not go there anymore) and it was a big deal to have another vet look at my file and fill the prescription. My dog had a seizure that day because of Banfield's negligence. The seizure permanently paralyzed her, so she had to be put down.
I have long been a believer in Banfield and the Optimum Wellness Plans. I went to Banfield when I lived in Atlanta, and it was generally a positive experience. I went to Banfield when I lived in Las Vegas, and the veterinarians there were amazing. I wish I could say the same about this place. I've been using this Banfield for just over a year, and they do some things well. They are good about remembering that one of my dogs has aggression issues. They work with me to get my dogs out from procedures early because we have a three hour drive to get home. But I was very disappointed with the care my dogs received when they went in for their dental cleaning last Saturday. The first problems was that the veterinarian, it turns out, had failed to give me a lot of information about a procedure she and I agreed would be in one of my dog's best interests. She and I discussed this procedure six months before the dental visit, in a great deal of detail. At that time, she suggested that it would be wise to prophylactically remove a compromised tooth because he is so old and the tooth was likely to break. So I scheduled him to have the tooth removed. On the day of the scheduled surgery, the same vet called to say that it was dangerous and would diminish the bone density in my dog's jaw. Why was I not informed of this before? I cancelled the surgery, but it is unacceptable that the veterinarian failed to provide me with the facts necessary to make the decision in the first place. When I was called to pick my dogs up, I was given a specific time that was earlier than I had been allowed to pick them up in the past. Of course, since it is a three hour drive to Salt Lake City, I had scheduled other things for the day. I was chastised for being unable to pick the dogs up on command. I felt further chastised when I received both of my dogs' condition reports after their dental cleaning. The reports both said "needs improvement" and stated that they were bringing a number of health issues to my attention. Each and every issue was one I had previously raised with the vet and been told not to worry about. Some of them even contradicted what the vet had previously told me about whether the subject raised actually was an issue. What, then, is the point of raising these same things in a form designed to make a pet owner feel like a bad parent? More distressing, though, the vet had prescribed antibiotics for my male dog. And no one could tell me why. The vet, of course, was unavailable to explain. I was told she would call early on the next business day, or Monday, to explain and answer my questions. This is the 4th business day since I was supposed to hear from the vet. She never called, nor has she returned my subsequent calls. Finally, my female dog started vomiting blood. I could not drive three hours to Banfield, so I took her to a local vet. The local vet was stunned when I said that my dog had received a dental cleaning from a veterinarian because he felt that such a poor job had been done on the actual cleaning. In addition, her gum had been cut and was infected. She was running a fever. Those were all of concern to the vet, but he said they were not the reason she was vomiting blood. Instead, he said that my dog's stomach had been scraped up by the tube they put down the throat and into the stomach during anesthesia. In other words, Banfield got careless and gave my great dane an ulcer. Wellness measures should make a dog healthier, not sick. The standard of care received in this visit showed poor recordkeeping, poor communication with patients' owners, and negligence. I will not be returning to this Banfield.
I was very disappointed with the service here. I waited for 45 minutes before I even saw a vet tech and when she came in she didn't even know what I was there for. Then I waited another twenty minutes before I even saw the vet. I was only at this hospital because my pet had been injured while at one of their grooming places so I thought maybe Petsmart would help cover some of the cost, but I would much rather pay for vet services out of pocket at a place I can trust who will give my dog the best care.
They tried to kill my cat! Don't go to the vet's office in this store. Let me go more into detail. I have been taking my pets there for a while. The prices are high but I felt I was getting good service even through I don't agree with some of thier opions on how to train and take care of dogs and cats. I can deal with that. BUT when I took my cat, Mop, in to get fixed the lady at the front desk was flat out rude. I treat people I hate better then she treated me. Well, Mop got fixed and they sent her home. The vet gave me a dewormer and pain killers to give her when I got home. Her next check up was in two weeks when they would give her the second dose of dewormer. Now, in order to deworm a cat you are giving her a small dose of pison, enough to kill the worms but not a healthy animal. So basically they sent her home after a big surgery when her body is needs everything it can get to heal and told me to pison her while she's knocked up on pain meds. And by the way, I gave her HALF the dose they told me to and it almost knocked her out. For those of you that are thinking it was the pain, nope. I let the pain meds they had already given her wear off. I didn't want to over dose my baby. But she was a healthy kitten before getting fixed and she was very kittenish after too. They also gave me a kind of pain killer that is HIGHLY addictive. DO NOT GO HERE! I am now looking for another vet.
