Boarded our 12 year old border collie for four nights, along with updating shots and getting a much needed bath. He's never been boarded before, but seemed happy and healthy when we picked him up. The staff was very attentive and answered all my questions promptly and thoroughly. They are the new family vet and choice for boarding kennel!! They are awesome and very reasonably priced!
Overall this was a very good experience - I felt like I was with a medically-trained professional and not just a passionate hobbyist. Some vets tend to be more vague e.g. "give them water and rest", this was much more specific e.g. "they have this disease, it's treatable by this, here's the treatment plan you need". Brought in a young Syrian with wet tail, they took a swab and ID'ed the bacteria and prescribed meds. Total visit was $50 including meds. Perhaps a bit much for a hamster, but I would happily go back. Getting real knowledge is valuable not only for this hamster but for all my future ones, and I value this clinic's knowledge more than the multiple Internet websites I visited. Also, no one else within a 20 mile radius will treat hamsters or rats, so this was a great find.
Our dog died a short time ago from cancer (July 8th, 2014), which Companion failed to diagnose. In fact, no tests of any kind were run on our dog, even though we requested an X ray relatively early on in the process (early June, 2014). Up to a week before our beloved dog's death, Companion was still talking about a diagnosis involving some kind of disc problem. This is negligence. No thought or effort was put into the case. The staff at the desk lose files, and phone numbers, all the time, and they give the impression of not caring as well. For all the times that I have gone in there, they remember nothing, and also find nothing, by way of files.
I had to go out of town for a week and couldn't take my dog with me. I called around for places to board my dog and got the best vibe from Companion Animal Clinic, so I went to check them out. They were really nice about letting me look around and get a feel for the kennels and the staff. My dog sometimes has bad separation anxiety (he can be destructive, loud, and messy) which I told them about, and they didn't mind at all. It eased my mind to know that if anything were to happen, that a full vet staff was right there to treat my dog. They cared for my pet, the prices were super affordable, and my dog came back to me freshly bathed and with his nails trimmed. I don't think I could have asked for more.
I have had two terrible experiences with Companion. The first involved my dog I brought there with an infection on his paw. They gave him some antibiotics which didn't fix him. I brought him back because they didn't fix it the first time and they wanted to charge me a re-exam fee even though it was the same problem they had examined the first time. Then they tried to just give me some more random antibiotics. I had to suggest culturing the bacteria and sending it off to find out what antibiotic to use, they never even suggested it! Then they failed to mention to me that the antibiotic he was on causes diarrhea. I didn't find out until I was cleaning it off the floor! My second bad experience was when I had another dog brought in for an update on his distemper. I specifically mentioned I did not want the annual exam done, just the shot and a heartworm test (I had the annual exam done by my families vet when I was home visiting). They strongly recommended it when making my appointment but told me I could insist it not be done. I was unable to take my dog to the clinic myself so I had my roommate. He specifically told them when checking in we only wanted those 2 things and no annual exam. He got the same recommendation speech about it etc. They still charged me $49 for the annual exam and refused to refund it when I called later. The only thing they did according to my roommate, who I have known my whole life, was feel around on his ribs, give him his shot and do a heart worm test (which was charged separately). What a scam! I am never taking another dog there.
