My beloved Bearded Dragon Tony seemed lethargic and sick. Normally, he was ready and waiting for his dinner, but he got to the point where he just seemed abnormally sleepy. When I picked him up and put him down, he just laid in the same place I left him. He was nearly unresponsive to touch at all and his shedding cycle seemed off, too. I took him to the Milwaukee Emergency for Animals pet hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A good friend of mine said they specialize in exotics, so I was hopeful they would be able to help. Boy did they exceed all my expectations! Upon Tony's exam, they knew exactly what was wrong. They gave him IV fluids, a special mixture of vitamins and minerals he was deficient in and with their advice, I have adjusted his diet and lighting in his aquarium. Tony is happy and healthy and I am a very happy customer! The staff at MECA is second to none -- from the reception staff, to the vets...they are kind and knowledgeable!
Horrible place! They are out for your money! My cat had fleas and I bathed him with Hartz shampoo. The next day he wasn't himself, was sleeping all day and not moving much. So I called and asked the animal hospital and asked if I can bathe him in dawn dish soap and water. They said no bring him in immediately! So I did, and what did they do? Bathed my cat in dawn dish soap! They just wanted my money! They charged me $100 to "examine" him and they didn't even tell me what they checked on him. Just gave him a bath, which I could've done myself! The doctor wasn't even knowledgeable and I knew more than her when it came to talking about fleas.
Everyone there was so kind and helping in our time of need. Our dog got into something on a sunday when no other vets were open, and thankfully we found Milwaukee emergency center for animals. As soon as we arrived and stated what we were there for they took him in the back and started working on him immediately, I believe it saved his life. Thank you!!! I will be going back to MECA any time I have a emergency.
I wish I could give this place negative stars. If you have an exotic pet, please do yourself a favor and take them to the UW Madison Vet School. People who are still learning will be much more thorough and careful in diagnosing your animal. MECA won't give your companion the attention they deserve: if the animal's symptoms don't match their textbook understanding of possible causes, they will pretend it does and charge you exorbitant amounts in the process. I was robbed on two accounts: financially and, more significantly, emotionally. My rabbit died because of the extreme incompetence of these so-called "exotic professionals." My rabbit stopped eating, so I took him here, thinking it might be a digestive problem. They took x-rays and his digestive system was fine. They sent us home with antibiotics and told us to call back if nothing improved. Nothing improved. I took him back and they kept him for 3 days. "We know it's not GI stasis, but we're going to treat it as though it were," is what I was told. Not only was he still not eating on his own when I brought him home after this lengthy stay, he had an eye infection to boot. When I took him back for the third time, I feared it might be an abscess. I have no veterinary background obviously, but I've known others who have lost rabbits to abscesses. He was displaying all the symptoms. When I mentioned this to the doctor, she failed to investigate this possibility at all and took chest x-rays instead. Which showed nothing. Two weeks and hundreds of dollars later, still without answers and distraught at the prospect that I could lose my boy, I ended up taking him to the UW Madison Vet School where they took the time to investigate and confirm my suspicions: yes, he did have abscesses--several--which explained his lack of appetite. Unfortunately, so much time had passed that there was nothing they could do. He passed away there while they were trying to save him. I'm writing this because I'm so heartbroken that my bun had to endure such unnecessary suffering while MECA screwed off for a week, so angry that they could not diagnose him correctly when they had so many opportunities to, and hopeful that by conveying how incredibly inept this establishment is, others can avoid going through what I'm going through. TL;DR: MECA sucks, my dear bun died because of their mistakes. Save yourself the money and anxiety and go to the UW Vet School in Madison in an emergency.
Watch your billing statement. Question every entry. We paid almost $500 for a Radiograph and an Untrasound, neither of which were done, and it wasn't until I questioned it did they admit it.
