I don't know about the negative reviews. My wife and I are very intelligent people, we ask plenty of questions and even had second and third opinions for one of our dogs in respect to cancer. We always received factual answers and compassionate care. We coordinated surgical care for one of our dogs that had to have a leg removed due to bone cancer. Some places wanted to give Chemo, Radiation and plenty of costly and drawn out treatment strategies that had questionable success rates. St Paul's recommended the the approach that removed the leg, but also removed the cancer. Our 10 year old athletic dog had one leg removed, became a tripod and went on for about 4 more healthy years. Check backs every 6 months. At 14, this large breed mix finally came back with a very virulent cancer and it was too far gone. A great life for him post operation, even after having his leg removed. It's a blue collar clinic, not a boutique. The staff really cares. I could go on even more about how compassionate they are, how they helped some of our other animals....enough to fill a few pages.

*I need to say that this was eight or so years ago.* The clinic may have changed hands. My vet was closed for the day so I brought my dog to St Paul. She had a discharge. They did an x-ray and said she would need an emergency spay. My dog would need to stay over night and have her surgery in the am. The young girl who looked at my dog was inexperienced at best. I asked a few questions and it was upsetting her. When I got to the question of who was going to do the surgery and how many of these surgeries had been done by that person she snapped "Why do you keep questioning me?" As it turned out, it would have been this girl and it would have been her first. I took my dog home. In the morning I took her to my Dr Frank at Lakeside who said she had a simple bladder infection. She was given antibiotics and recovered in no time. Thank you Dr Frank!

I took my puppy here some years back for some bumps that i had noticed on her feet. They immediately wanted to do surgery on her that day to remove the bumps and send them for pathology. I declined the immediate need for surgery and took her for a second opinion. The new vet had stated that this was a virus similar to a hpv and it is often seen on puppies, also that it would go away on its own. If these doctors are so experienced, how did they not know what this was? After speaking to many people who also have gone to this place (only one time), most had said that the vet had suggested surgery for simple and very treatable (not surgical) problems.

I love this place. They have more experience than most vets in the city - they see everything. Jenna is awesome and has helped several of my dogs to a speedy recovery. I can't thank them enough and they are very affordable!

I've used this vet for various services for my pets and my freinds' pets over the years. #1 The 'waiting': Please understand that this is a walk-in clinic. They try to stay open later for people who can't simply 'take off' of work for their pets. There are busy times and there are slow times, just like a human's urgent care. Surgeries are always scheduled (like a spay/neuter) and they'll even let you drop your buddy off the night before if you need to. Worried about having your pet seen IMMEDIATELY? Either CALL FIRST and ask about the possible wait or take them to an emergency vet. This is the basically the equivalent to an 'urgent care' type of place, with the exception of their low-cost scheduled surgeries. #2 The facility: it's in a semi-rough neighborhood, but I've never felt unsafe and I'm a petite female who doesn't take a chaperon. It's a bit outdated, sure. It's a strange unwelcoming beige-y tan color with tiled floors. THIS IS NOT A BOUTIQUE VET. THIS IS A LOW COST CLINIC. This clinic keeps costs so low because they don't waste their time on updating the look and feel of the place. You want frills? Go to a vet in the north shore. #3 The costs: They are BY FAR the lowest cost vet clinic in the Milwaukee area. I had both of my male (adult) cats neutered here for a mere $75 each (back in '07). They, of course, will tell you about the extra bells/whistles/testing that can be done (like for FIV), but UNLIKE OTHER CLINICS you can simply opt out to help save on costs. #4 The care: I ended up taking friend's (they were stuck at work) cat in for a follow-up on a rather sizable leg wound. They did not charge for the follow-up visit, and they suggested another shot of antibiotics. I wasn't going to shell out for the extra anti-bios ($40), but after checking the Dr. said that it was technical expired (by 2 days) and that they could give it for free. Awesome. One of my boys came down with some sort of nasty cat flu thing. He was miserable and feverish. Well, I got him down to the clinic (around opening time) and was seen within 30-40min. They gave him some shots of fluid under the skin and some anti-bios, and the whole thing was under $200 including the test for FIV they gave him. They told me to come back for a (no-charge) follow-up, but since he was doing sooo much better after a few hours with the shot, I simply called and let them know about his progress. I use 'Bayshore Vet Clinic' in Shorewood for emergency off-hours stuff, like my one guy who developed urine crystals (full blockage requiring the catheter and 3-days' stay, over $1.5k for reference) and again when he swallowed 3ft of a cotton drawstring (another $500 of x-rays and such but no surgeries needed). Just as with dealing with the staff of an urgent care or ER, a little civility and compassion go a LONG way. Keep a pleasant demeanor and mind your p's and q's and you won't have to wait long. I find the staff is usually SURPRISED when I'm courteous and pleasant, which is pretty disheartening for these people who are just trying to freakin' help you. Remember that these people work at a low-cost vet clinic. They deal with people arguing about payments, prices, care, etc. while that staff knows full-well that those same obnoxious people would pay 2-3 times their price anywhere else.
